| The cavalry battle took place just east of Culp's Hill. It is outside
the park proper but close by.
Stuart was NOT sent that way by Lee. He was late arriving at
Gettysburg because he took his men on a wide circle route into
Maryland then back westward to rejoin the ANV. His glory ride and long
absence contributed to the South's defeat. (Not to mention
Longstreet's delays, bad timing between the artillery barrage and
Picket's Charge, ...)

The area designated as the East Cavalry Battlefield, which -IS- a
part of the 25-square-miles Gettysburg National Military Park,
is located three miles east of Gettysburg right on U.S. Route 30.
The East Cav area is well marked with monuments & historical markers
designating the action that took place there, even though it is
only a few acres in size. A paved road ( or 2 ??) runs off Rte 30
through the park.

re: .2
Oooooops... :-( I had "Route 30" on my mind for other reasons
and accidently entered it in that reply.
The East Cavalry Field is not on Route 30, it is 3 miles east
of Gettysburg on Route 116 ! Sorry for any confusion or mistakes
this may have caused anyone!

| Without knowing the particulars, I do know there was a calvary skirmish
on the 3rd day of the battle, that took place in the Union rear. Lee
sent Stuart off to prevent the escape of the Union army once Pickett
had successfully broken the center.
Stuart was intercepted by none other than General George Armstrong
Custer.
I'd suggest a quick trip to the library for a book on the subject, of
which there are hundreds. Shouldn't be much trouble finding the
details.
