94.0. "Seige of Vicksburg" by BSS::HOLLAND (Galvanized Yankee) Fri Apr 30 1993 18:54

Since my great great grandfather fought and was captured at Vicksburg,
I have a great interest in the Seige of Vicksburg. He was Private
John Holland in Company A 37th Alabama Infantry.

    Any thoughts on this seige?

The first reply is a email I received from someone that lives in
Vicksburg that subscribes to the Roots-L server on the Internet. I
was inquiring about a list of prisoners taken by the Federal troops.

Hi Mike (and others interested in the Seige of Vicksburg),

There may be published or archived sources regarding the lists you
want, but I thought I would take a different tack. Since I live
right here in Vicksburg, I called up Terry Winschel, who is the
Park Historian at the Vicksburg National Military Park, and put
your question to him. He told me that they do not have a POW list
as such, but rather a parole list of the Confederates who surrendered
at the seige's end. For each soldier who accepted parole, Terry
has the name, rank, company, and regiment of service. Some cards
also indicate "in hospital" for those under medical care at the
time. Unfortunately, all of this information is on approximately
29,500 index cards. So, he can't send you the whole list, but, if
you have certain names you would like checked, he welcomes your
correspondence (see address below). As a side note, there were
also 702 Confederates who did not accept parole, and who may or
may not be on his records.

In addition, there is a 44-page burial list for the Park, which they
will be glad to copy and mail at $0.25 (US) per page plus a nominal
shipping and handling fee.

For more information about the above, or anything else relating to the
Siege of Vicksburg, direct your inquiries to:
