93.0. "This Month, 102 Years Ago" by CORA::64884::DFRIEDRICH () Mon Apr 05 1993 14:18
Over 13 Texas forts have been abandoned to the Confederates within
the last few weeks. On April 3rd, the Schooner Rhoda H. Shannon
was fired upon by Confederate batteries, which may constitute
the first shots fired in this conflict (verses the bombardment of
Fort Sumter). Two days later, Fort Quitman, Texas, is also evacuated.
On April 7th, Federal forces set sail from New York to re-enforce
Fort Pickens, Florida. Three days later, a second expedition sails
from NY harbor to relieve Fort Sumter, SC. On the following day,
General Beauregard demands that Federal troops evacuate the Fort.
