| Butterfield was a 1st Sgt in the Clay Guards, a D.C. Volunteers
unit at the beginning of the war, and then on May 12, 1861 he
was commisioned Colonel of the 12th N.Y. Militia. He was awarded
the Medal of Honor for Gaines' Mills. He was chief of staff for the
AoP (from Jan 1, 1863 until he was wounded July 3rd at Gettysburg)
under both Hooker then Meade. In the fall of '63 he rejoined Hooker
at Chattanooga as his chief of staff. He never attended West Point
but he is buried there.

Good, also I believe he was a Butterfield of the Butterfield &
Overland Stage family which grew into Wells Fargo ? I think he also
got involved in the carpetbagging thing, (to his shame), got elected
down south somewhere, but I could have mixed him up with someone else.

And we have a winner!!
You have a loonnng memory. More specifically, it was after the battle
of Malvern Hill. Butterfield wanted something to memorialize all of the
soldiers, on both sides, that had died over the previous seven days.

I was wrong about Butterfield being a carpetbagger but nobody has
called me on it yet so I'll break into to something new. My emphasis
is primarily on the life of the subject in question AFTER the war but
I'll take any intresting facts. NEXT GENERAL: Samuel Powhatan Carter
Anyone want to take a stab on him?...............Aaron.

interested...Well I'll give it another day and spill the beans.

88.10 | No relation to Jimmy | ELMAGO::JPALLONE | | Thu Feb 18 1993 12:43 | 9 |
| I looked him up last night....He was a one star(I didn't want to spell
brigadier) general for the Feds, his claim to glory was burning
bridges around Union, Tennessee, near the Kentucky state line around
new year's eve 1862....There were New York regiments in the area at
that time....so I'm guessing he was affiliated with them....He was
considered a raider at that time.

RE.LAST
GOOD, I DIDN'T HAVE MUCH ON HIS WARTIME ACTIVITIES. I'LL HOLD OFF
ON HIS PECULIAR CLAIM TO FAME FOR A BIT. I WILL STATE THIS AS A CLUE
FOR THOSE WHO MAY STILL BE LOOKING. HE IS THE ONLY AMERICAN KNOWN TO
ACHIEVE THIS PARTICULAR DISTINCTION!!

Well a little late, but..... Who was one of the few Union
commanders who was successful in a behind-the-lines raid and
later became a great Buffalo Soldier Commander ? Name his post-
war unit and the enemy he faced.
Grins.
