    Jefferson Davis
    Born: dd-mmm-1808.	Christian County(now Todd County), Kentucky.
    
    Attended Transylvania University, Lexington, Kentucky.
    Before graduating, he was appointed to the U.S.M.A. (West Point)
    He graduated 23rd in a class of 33 in 1828.  Specialty:Infantry/Dragoons
    
    Served in the Army in the NorthWest Frontteer, 1828-1835, until ill-
    health forced him to retire as 1st Lieut..
    
    He settled down as a planter in Mississippi (1835-45).
    
    He eloped with the daughter of (President) Zachary Taylor (date-?),
    she died 3-months later.
    
    1845 - Elected to Congress, Rep. from Mississippi.
    1845 - Married Varina Howell
    1846 - Resigned from office to serve in the Mexican War.  He fought at
    	   Monterey and Buena Vista, where he was severly wounded.
    
    1847-1851  U.S. Senator - Mississippi
    
    1853-1857  Appointed Secretary of War by President Franklin Pierce.
    1853-1861  U.S. Senator - Miss. until the secession of Miss. from the
    	       Union.
    
    18-FEB-1861  Elected by the provisional Congress of the Conf. States
    		 as President.
    
    10-MAY-1865	 Captured by the Federal Forces at Irwinsville, GA.
    
    1865-1867	 Imprisoned at Fort Monroe, VA.
    
    1866 - indicted for Treason, but released on a $100,000 bond signed by
    	   Horace Greeley (slavery opponent and founder of the New York 
    	   Tribune/1841.  -This action cost the Trib. nearly 50% of its 
    	   subscibers).
    
    1868   Federal Govt. dropped its case against him.
    
    1870-78  Engaged in several unsuccessful busines ventures.
    
    1878-89  Lived near Biloxi, Miss.
    
    Author of the book "Rise and Fall of the Confederate Govt."(1881)
