    The last resting place of the U.S.S. Monitor is near Cape Hatteras, but
    it's in about 30 fathoms of water. :-)

83.2Photo's of the wreck?WMOIS::MACK_JMon Oct 12 1992 15:2311
    Didn't the National Geographic do some photographic work on the
    wreck? Or was that someone else? I believe that it came to rest
    upside down, on it's turret or something like that. Memory is
    going on me, but I seem to recall that it was fairly intact (as
    wrecks go anyways, which isn't to say it looks exactly like it
    did the day it left Drydock) but it's identifiable. Also thought
    there was some sort of ideas being kicked around to raise it,
    however, because of the amount of time it's been there and so
    forth those plans would have to encompass a lot of measures
    to insure that it stayed together as it was raised.

    There was a quite stunning article about the Monitor in National
    geographic a couple of years ago. There was historical information
    along with photos, including a mosaic of the whole boat. As I recall,
    it was indeed capsized, with various parts strewn about the area.

    I believe thoughts of raising the boat were scuttled (pun intended) by
    the hard facts of its being too badly corroded to be raised with any
    degree of success.

83.4So I wasn't dreaming...or...WMOIS::MACK_JFri Oct 16 1992 11:0710
    RE: .3
        So I wasn't "in my cups" after all and did see that article.
    	Thanks for confirming that. Wasn't there something about a
    	Leather Belt that drove part of the engine or something that
        they could Identify? I seem to recall that it had settled on
    	its turret and over the years the thing has gradually been
        decomposing. Never did find out if it went down before everyone
        could get out or not though.

    I don't recall just what the article said, but I file Geographic and
    will look for it.
