I was watchin Jeopardy last night, and one of the questions under "The Civil War" was: What was the only Confederate capitol never invaded by Yankee troops? And the answer was..... Tallahassee! I thought the South only ever had two cities that were it's capitols, ie Montgomery and Richmond!? When was Tallahassee the capitol?

Could they have been referring to state capitols vs. the national?

RE .0, .1: I'm sure they were referring to state capitols - though I'm not sure the Texas capitol was invaided by Federals during the war. Certainly all of the other state capitols in the Confederacy were captured. MikeR

I am convinced that it is state capitols that are mentioned. During the early Reconstruction period, Federal troops occupied many state capitols and expelled the state congressmen, because they passed "Black Code" legislation inimical to the rights of former slaves. Toby

Relating to this subject is a story in the magazine "America's Civil War", the September edition of this year. The author, Leslie Barns, tells there the war story of the little village Washington in Arkansas. After the federal occupation of Little Rock on September 10, 1863 this town became the state Capital of Confederate Arkansas until the end of the war. Nowadays this town is a National Park in complete 19th century stile. As to the question; this capital was never occupied by the federals but I vigor it don't count as a real one.
