Greetings JGF....
If you want to, drop me mail message to my node and I will
try to get you in contact with some publishers, book clubs, etc. if
you are interested. I can't sem to remember the CSA or USA ever having
established a war relation with the Netherlands.. But, I'm sure if
anybody else knows, they will let me know!!! :^)
I will venture one step further, if you are interested in ever
participating in an Civil War Reenactment (that is march around in wool
uniforms, firing black powder weapons at each other) I would be more
than willing to help set up a trip with you over to the States.
One reenactment group I belong to (the 13th Virginia) has members
in England and one in Australia that travel just to participant in
a battle or two every once in awhile.....
I await your response....

G'day JGF,
While you may not be able to find any books on the ACW in
Netherlands, there are plenty of books on the subject in the UK.
I have the book that is the companion to the recent tv series and it
makes excellent reading. There are many others too.
I will try to find some Titles/authors/ISBN numbers this weekend while
I am in London..and if you are interested in any of them we can make
some arrangement.
Please note that I will only be paying one more visit to the UK for
some months on the 24th July so it would be a good idea to sort it
out before then.
As for writings regarding Netherlands/CSA.. I have never come across
even a passing reference to this in any of the books I have read.
This is understandable (if somewhat frustrating from your point of
view) because no countries recognised the CSA as a sovereign nation
and therefore no official diplomatic links were possible.
It may be worthwhile to do research among Govmt papers here in the
Netherlands for the period..it may throw up some unofficial links
and discussion over whether to recognise the CSA as a nation.
(I would suspect some conclusion along the lines of "We will wait
for Britain to do so first").

Hello Aidan,
Indeed, I can't find books in the Netherlands on the ACW.
I order a lot to the USA but you know it is like buying through
a catalog. I know only a title and sometimes some reference.
And without that it takes always at least three months to get
the books here. So when it is possible to order some books from the
UK through you I would be very thankful. When you can note the titles
and authors and when possible the price cause I am very willing
to make some arrangement. Sure before the 24th July.
As for the subject. I want to write I book on the subject Netherlands-
ACW. Nobody recognised the CSA but there were serious attemps through
aggents(remember the Trent-affair) from the CSA government.
I wonder if they tried to achief some influnence in the Netherlands as
well. Never heard of it although but maybe somone knows something
om this. For my study a studied 4 newspapers and periodicals(liberal)
in their writings about the war 1860-1865. 4 different opinions I got
there. The war was known here and people talked about it. Specialy on
the topic for small countries to have a own government, to be
independent I mean. One of the greatest liberal items. You would be
wondered about the different opions here over the war. When you want
to know anything about, let me know.
As for this topic. I am also interested in the relations
USA-Netherlands in that period. They had both some welknown
Ambassadors. I know our one. I read his diary. I onces read somewhere
that there exsist also I writing on the USA ambassador in Holland
in that period, I forgot his name on the moment, will look it over.
Can anybody help me with this?
Greetings JGF (Fief)

78.5 | Seward's letters | XCUSME::MACINTYRE | | Wed Jul 08 1992 12:16 | 19 |
| During the ACW, Secretary of State Seward published a book or two that
contained a lot of his correspondence with the various embassies around
the world. I do not have any titles or reference but I understand that
at the time, it caused quite a stir in Washington.
During the war, Lincoln, with very few exceptions, left foreign policy
completely in Seward's hands. In the beginning, Lincoln would read
everything that went out under his name. Very soon, he stopped doing
that and Seward had a free hand in managing foreign relations.
Great Britain and France, and Germany to a lesser degree, were the
prime concerns for the U.S. I know of no specific dealings with the
Dutch government by either the U.S. or the C.S.A. Maybe Seward's
writing will shed some light.
Good luck,
Marv

Hello Slammer,
I'm sorry to say so but I havn't seen your message
yet. I'm trying to get to you as wel but seem to have
no results. Tried Ricker.Ken@OGO but no results,
than _VMOIS:K_Ricker and nothing to( both in ALL-Inn-1)
To get contact with someone like you seems to me as
a chance in livetime. After your first reply I have directly
ordered the book 13th Virginia in my bookstore. It's from
the Virginia Regimental series, Lynchburg, Va. Do you know
it? I've got some at home.
This weekend I will go to a town nearby. There is a second handed
bookstore where they have 1 of the two existing historybooks on
the ACW that have been published here in the Netherlands. I'll
buy it and try to send it to you through our Digitalpost. Don't
think you understand the language but you will know the foto's
and the names, besides of that I think it will have a nice place
in your collection. And don't worry; I've got one myself.
Have I nice weekend to. I'll spend mine with General D.H. Hill.
Noah Little ever fought under him? I,ll try to find that out.
Much greetings JGF.

Greetings to the overseas Southerner......
Try contacting me at OGOMTS::RICKER, what you see on ELF
is incorrect...I looked up your ELF address also, and that's want I
sent mail too.
Yes, I have the Virginia Regimental Series. I am about half to
three-quarters through collecting the whole series.
I still belong to the 13th Virginia, but, I am currently reenacting
with the 5th Alabama Battalion, Company A, Archer's Brigade, Heth's Div.
A.P. Hill's Corp., ANV. I have not reenacted with the 13th Virginia for
about three years now. It is just to long of trip to go from
Massachusetts to Virginia on weekends.
The 5th Alabama is a Massachusetts and Connecticut based outfit.
I currently hold the rank of second-sergeant. All total, (including
wives and children) we have about 80 members. Noah Little is my
alter-ego so to speak. He actually served with the 5th Alabama. I have
his war record and a picture of his gravestone from Alabama.
Rather than tie up this Notes-File, I will send you a history of
the 5th Alabama either through the mail or Digital post.
I'll swap books with you, I'll send a copy of the 5th Alabama's
history to you for the one you are sending me.
If you are really interested, maybe we could work it out for you
to come to the States for an reenactment. I have mentioned you to some
of the other members of the 5th Alabama and they are really interested
in helping out.
If you have a list of books you're interested in getting, drop me
a list and I'll see what I can do.
Long live R.E. Lee and the Confederacy!!!

Well I didn't get chance to do much while in the UK. I did go to the
local Dillons but it had been turned into an Oxfam shop.
I have got two books..one I would be willing to pass on is the the
book I mentioned before that goes with the recent tv series..this would
cost you around 100 guilders.
I have another one I havent read yet called something like
"The battle cry of Freedom" which covers the events from 1850 to
1865. If it looks like it will be of use to you I can pass it on
when I have read it.
The other book is exceptionally well done with lots of Photo's and
comments from ACW experts, also extracts from diaries written at the
time. The reason for the cost is that it costs 30 pounds to buy and I
will want to get it again for my collection.
I will have it here in early August so if you are interested send me
mail at NWGEDU::DONNELLY.
I am also going back to the UK again next Friday and will try some
shops in London for you.
Regards
Aidan
