| If you have names and know that your ancestor(s) served as Federal
personnel, you can write the U.S. Department of the Army for
information. I don't know the specific address (I think they keep
these records in Kansas City or St Louis), but a query sent to the
Department of the Army, The Pentagon, Alexandria, VA, to the attention
of some organization like Archives or Records, should get you started.
The national Archives in Washington, D.C., also have some of this
information and should be able to help you.

| They are not going to be great treasure....they already are. Just the
little photo's called carte-de-visite (or sumpin like that) are running
50-100 bucks each at Civil War shows.
You can get lots of good data on civil war participants from the
National Archives. You simply fill out a form, and then they get
back to you and tell you what they've got, and then for a small fee
they send copies. I'll try and remember to bring in their address
tomorrow. I wouldn't bother the department of the Army....they
aren't in that business.

| ....if you're from Mass or NH, you can also go to most libraries and
look in a series of volumes called "Massachusetts (or NH) Soldiers,
Sailors and Marines in the Civil War". This will tell you about what
units they were in, etc. I'm assuming other states have similar
data. I know there is a set on Mass in the Lowell Library, and Nashua
has a copy of the NH stuff. Good luck, and let me know if I can help.

Hi,
I've written to the national archives for several ansestors, you will
be happy with what you find. I've gotten marage licences for all of
them. This gives you that persons birthplace, their wives, her parents
and his-names and birth places. And it shows where they were during
the war at various points.
On the form you need to ask for Military Records, Pension Records, and
Land grant records. I've never sent for land grant records. I have
sent for Military and pension. The military consist of roll call
sheets, they state where they were on various dates and if your
ancestor was there for roll call or not. Also if they received a
bounty and clothing. The person looking for family info wants the
pension records. These give the marrage licence, list all wives,
children, and dependents. GREAT info.
Before you send in the form see if you can find the persons burial
place. They should have a military stone, this will list the state and
company he was in. If you don't have this info it will be alot less
likely to find your person, they send the form back and say not enough
info. This info is really important if you have a common name.
Let us know what you find.

GENEALOGY, and GENEAL_SOFTWARE are both now on NOBOZO.
By the way, I'm doing some genealogical research for a friend who's
far, far away, in a place where there are no Libraries, and I just
found that his grandfather was in the Sons of Union Veterans. He was
born 1860 in West Rockport, Maine and there were several families by
that name in the 1860 census for Camden, which is right next door. I
also looked at the 1890 Civil War dependents census and found a few of
that name listed in Camden.
My friend is named after his grandfather, Oxton, Alfred J., but I don't
know what the great-grandfather's name was yet. If anybody has access
to any of the Maine regiments' books, I'd like a hint where any Oxtons
might have served. It's not a very common name.
