2043.0. "Why genvmunix??" by DYOSW5::WILDER (Does virtual reality get swapped?) Sat May 03 1997 17:04

In the Installing Software manual for TruClusters, , it states that
when upgrading TruCluster software, you should boot into single user
mode with the genvmunix kernel, or a kernel that does not know about
    clusters.

    Why??

And, does this apply when you are simply upgrading the OS, which
requires you to de-install TCR and then re-install TCR? When upgrading
the OS, does it matter which kernel you are using?

    Thanks,

So the existing nodes on the cluster interconnect do not see you
join the cluster. If they did, they'd presume you intended to join
the cluster and were going to do so running the currently installed
yet unwanted version of the software. They also might decide to
migrate services over to your node, which is definitely a no-no.

When upgrading the OS, we do require you de-install the TCR subsets.
This is mainly a build issue. The TCR install creates references the
baseos install area back to the TCR area. These have to be removed so
the new install of the upgraded baseos will not fail. Sometimes the
baseos will change so different references are needed. Also the TCR
install sometimes looks at baseos attributes at install time and
installs based on them, so if you change out the baseos without a TCR
re-install those decisions may be invalidated.

Most of the notes in this file that refer to failed kernel builds are
because these procedures are not followed correctly.
