Hi, A customer of ours is using TruCluster Available Server V1.3 on Digital UNIX 3.2g. He is configuring Sybase which uses RAW partitions on the cluster. LSM is used for disk mirroring. The question of whether the configuration is SUPPORTED or NOT SUPPORTED from an MCS perspective has come up. Does the Digital components of this solution i.e TRUCLUSTER ASE support the failover of RAW devices. We know that 1) Yes, the product can me made to failover RAW devices by including them in the DISK service along with the SYBASE binaries. 2) Numerous customers have done this before with SYBASE and one of them is a reference site for the product. 3) TRUCLUSTER Production Server supports Distributed Raw Devices but because Sybase does not use this feature, it would still access the raw partitions in the same manner as in ASE. So the question remains. Does the product support the failover of RAW devices. By support we mean that the customer would like to be assured that an IPMT could be raised if any bugs are found relevant to the failover of raw disks. Can anyone please comment. Many thanks Brian

As far as I know, raw devices are supported for failover in ASE and therefore would be subject to be IPMT'ed by the CSC should a bug requiring a patch/fix be found. As a CSC focal for ASE and Trucluster, I am confident it would be worked. I do not speak for USEG, so the question of whether or not the IPMT would be accepted and worked, needs to be commented on by someone in that organization (Rob Marshall, are you listening?). 1961.2 | Yes, raw disk services are supported | NETRIX::"[email protected]" | Gregory P. Myrdal | Wed Apr 02 1997 13:57 | 8 |
Yes, raw disk services are supported. When creating a DISK service one can specify NONE as the mount point. The assumption is that some application is writing to the disk instead os using a filesystem. This we support in the current Available Server product (which is included in the Production Server product). -- Greg [Posted by WWW Notes gateway] |
