1397.0. "CORBA Notes conference" by LEMAN::DONALDSON (Froggisattva! Froggisattva!) Mon May 12 1997 04:40

I'd like to propose that we create (well *re-create*)
a CORBA notes conference. This would not only handle
ObjectBroker stuff but act as a forum for all Digital
ORB use.

I'm coming into contact with Iona (Orbix) and VisiGenic
(VisiBroker) implementations at the moment and I suspect that
the variety will increase.

I'm sure our group would agree to moderate such a conference.

Bonjour John !

I think that's a very good idea to create a Corba Notesfile. I was about to ask
this question but you have already answered it! Do you intend to create the
notesfile or are you proposing a vote ?

We are also in contact with Iona and Visigenic and we would be glad to share our
experience (and problems ;-))

Regards,
Stephane.

Stephane,

I'm just testing the water at the moment.
I'm willing to host (in a very passive way) a conference.

I guess we could extend the meaning of the ObjectBroker
conferences (which are very quiet at the moment) to
include other Orbs. However, I don't think the moderator
of such an inclusive conference should be a BEA employee.

John, I think this is a great idea. I'd be happy to help moderate.
    I'm both a DIGITAL employee, and a signer of a BEA non-disclosure
agreement. So perhaps I can act as a go-between if the need
    arises.

It won't be possible for a BEA employee to moderate, because they
will be cut off from this network in the very near future.

John, it sounds like you're in a good position. I'm
a little bit worried that here in Europe the physical
separation from the BEA-ex-DEC people will create
problems. So, I think you're physical proximity will
be useful.

Some questions:

	- what is happening to SEND?

	- what is happening to the current conferences?

	- is anyone responsible for migration inside Digital?

	- Perhaps someone like Dan Gilfix is in a good position
	  to set this up?

Otherwise, lets do it ourselves. How long should we wait?

Can anyone tell us who is left *inside* Digital?
(From the group of engineers who used to work on ObjectBroker).

1397.6All OBB people went to BEASEND::SLAVINWed May 14 1997 10:5919
>Can anyone tell us who is left *inside* Digital?

None. All managers, developers, testers and writers were included in
the sale of ObjectBroker to BEA. However, Erik Mintz TUXEDO::MINTZ is
a new manager working on ObjectBroker at Digital. He and I are the
managers for Digital and BEA respectively who are responsible for
continuing things like notes files for each company. We are working
closely together on these and other items.

Contact Erik about what Digital will plan to do with notes files, bug
tracking and other such items after the BEA systems are removed from
the Digital network. SEND is a BEA system. All of the ObjectBroker
cluster and other hardware was sold to BEA. These systems will be
coming off the Digital network in a few weeks. We will be moving out
of the Digital site at a later date.

Mary Ann Slavin, BEA ObjectBroker Engineering Manager

As MarayAnn said, no ObjectBroker or MessageQ engineers
are left *working* for Digital. Like most of the other
groups Digital sold off, the employees involved in the
sale are told that they either accept the job offers from
the new company buying the product, or you are considered
to have "voluntarily" resigned from Digital. So either way,
you no longer end up working for Digital.

If by "inside" Digital, you mean physically located (vs.
who writes our pay checks), then also as MaryAnn said,
we are still physically located inside Digital (ZKO2)
in for the most part the same offices. But only until
we move to office space not owned by Digital (the Digital-
BEA contract only says the new offices have to be within
a 25 mile radius of our current offices).

Thanks for the clarifications. I guess we need to bring
Erik Mintz into the discussion. He hasn't been exactly
*active* in the conferences yet!

And what's Dan's (Gilfix) role in all this? He seems
to still be in the picture somewhere.

Dan Gilfix is the Digital ObjectBroker Product Manager. Just like
before OBB was sold to BEA.
