1377.0. "Iona/Orbix <-> ORB?" by EEMELI::MANNISTO (oman.pp.fi) Mon Mar 03 1997 03:50

    A Orbix user (a BIG one) faced the challenge to have a OVMS server.
    While Orbix does not work on VMS they asked if (ex) Digital
    ObjectBroker could do the VMS side? The clients are W95/NT/Solaris.

    Do/should ObjectBroker and Iona/ORBIX co-operate?

Current releases of ObjectBroker and Orbix do not interoperate. However,
the new version of ObjectBroker under development, will be CORBA V2
compatible. Then the 2 products should inter-operate. Time frame for
the next ObjectBroker release is late summer 1997.

	Another alternative is to replace Orbix with ObjectBroker
	on the clients as ObjectBroker also supports all those
	clients you listed ...
1377.3Option three...REQUE::HERRLICHMon Mar 03 1997 11:279
Install ObjectBroker on an NT or Solaris machine and write a "gateway" program that is
an Orbix server and OBB client for requests going to VMS and you can also write a
program that is an OBB server and Orbix client for requests coming from VMS. The NT or
Solaris machine would act as a gateway to the VMS machine. This isn't a good general
solution, but might be workable depending on how complex your communication with the
VMS machine needs to be. Disclaimer: I have never actually done this, but know of no
reason it wouldn't work.

    Also I was just informed that IONA "is planning to have a beta release
    of ORBIX for OpenVMS in the first halfe of 97".

    planning .... says me enougth .... btw: in our competitive matrix we
    reflect that IONA supports an open VMS ORBIX. May we should correct
    this now to "forever planned" ... out of money.

    It also depends on the 'flavour' of OpenVMS - IONA are only planning
    an Alpha release, not VAX.
