>> How is OMG progressing?
If you see OMG Home Page and Document Archive, you can know the official
status. In the end of 1996, the first submissions were provided by three
groups. Then the revised joint submission was delivered for the next TC
meeting on the beginning of March. I guess this is the very final one.
Also, another RFP of this area will be submitted at the next TC meeting,
which is about the reverse Java mapping(Java to IDL).
If you need mode detail and unofficial level information, I guess you should
contact to Dan Frantz, who is the contact point of Digital according to
submission document.

| Matsuno-san got it right. Here's a few more details.
1) A mapping from IDL to the Java language was submitted to the OMG
ORB Task Force by a large group of companies (that is, a joint
submission, no competition). It was accepted at the task force
level. A Technical Committee Fax Vote is now underway; it usually
takes about three months. After that, the Board of Directors must
approve it before it becomes an adopted specification. The Fax
Vote and BOD approval are usually pro forma, so the mapping is
pretty much adopted.
2) A cute little procedural mechanism was also used. The mapping didn't
map the server side to the BOA, as in previous language mappings,
because the Portability RFP is deleting the BOA in favor of a new
object adapter called the POA. However, the Portability RFP has not
yet been finally submitted or approved. The IDL to Java mapping thus
made a super simple server side mapping, sufficient for playing
around with for now. The procedural trick was to leave the RFP open
until the Portability RFP finishes. At that time, the IDL to Java
RFP will complete its specification of server side mapping in a
totally compatible fashion (that is, not changing any of the mapping
already approved). There will presumably be another vote to complete
that part of the mapping.
