613.0. "1994 Donruss baseball" by SEND::TANCILL (Sponsered by nobody) Mon Dec 13 1993 22:09

    The 1994 baseball season has begun with Donruss first out of the gate.
    Supposed to be the smallest Donruss baseball run since 1985 (whatever
    that means). The cards are full bleed photos front and back, gold
    foil stamped, UV coated. There is one gold card per pack. Insert
    sets include a 10 card 1984 Donruss commemerative subset (I got
    Nolan Ryan and 2 Cal Ripken in the box me and the boys ripped), a 10
    card dominator set (got 3 in our box), and Diamond Kings (also 3).

    Also in the box is a 3 1/2" x 5" Dominator card (we got Ron Gant).
    For golds we did pretty good, getting Piazza and Griffey. Oh yeah,
    and my oldest son also pulled a Frank Thomas Elite card, #2368/10,000.
    We did happen to hit a very good box. THe dealer I got it from opened
    4 from his case, no Elite card.

    The cards themselves are pretty nice, although they seemed to be
    more interested in putting another full bleed photo on the back
    rather than putting stats on the back. Packs seem to be going from
    $1.50-$2.00, boxes from $40-$55, with the product selling briskly
    at several local stores. Direct cost was ~$34 a box.

613.1More on Donruss 1994TWOBA::HAYESTue Dec 14 1993 10:0120
    Yep, not a bad card but I do prefer the Salute to Ryan card where they
    put the complete carreer stats (they did it on Brett too).

    Elites are much more prevelent this year. Al got 2 in two boxes (both
    John Kruks 8*( ). I got an Albert Belle Elite out of 3 boxes. First
    time I ever pulled an Elite (I would have prefered your Thomas though
    Jeff).

    Donruss sent a letter to all direct dealers stating that an independent
    firm has verified that total production of all Donruss baseball was
    17,500 cases. This includes Hobby, retail and jumbo's and that no more
    will be printed. they stated that yes, this was the lowest production
    since 1985.

    I also liked the way they did the gold set. Instead of one gold card of
    every player they only did 50 players. The Ryan Gold is nice. I do wish
    that they would make the numbers more legible and put them all in the
    same place. Tough on the eyes to sort.

    Can't wait for Donruss Hockey.......

    I opened one box of the 94 Donruss. Nice prodect, although all of the
    full-bleed cards are starting to look the same (i.e. TSC, Ultra etc.)

    Got 2 commemorative cards....R Henderson and Boggs, 3 Dominator and
    4 DK's. Also got an my first Elite card (Salmon #1,213/10,000) and
    the BIG Dominator cards was Gonzales.

    The best part of the box I opened was that I got a full set of the
    regular cards. What a nice change of pace that was! Also did not
    get one dupe of the Special Edition Gold. If someone is looking to
    trade, I am interested in finishing this Gold set and have a wantlist.
    Also have extras of the regular issue if anyone needs them....not many
    though....how refreshing!!!!!

613.4King of Kings??KAOS::STOLLMon Dec 27 1993 18:106
    After opening 3 boxes (2 Hobby 1 Retail) I found a DK29. According to
    the wrappers DK1-15 will be in series 1 and 16-30 in series 2. Did
    anyone else get 1 of these. It also says King of Kings in red foil on
    the front.

    King of Kings is Dave Winfield. I haven't seen a #15 yet, only 1-14
    and # 29. Series II will probably be 15-28 and #30 (most likely the
    checklist).
