610.0. "93-94 Stadium Club Basketball " by SEND::TANCILL (Sponsered by nobody) Tue Nov 30 1993 16:28
93-94 Stadium 1 is out, a redesigned card front and back is the
first thing you'll notice. Players have regular cards and then
there are some triple/double cards marking the dates the player
had a triple/double. These cards in particular look a little
too much like a fun pack card, especially the backs. It seems
Topps may have been going for a "MTV" type hip look, perhaps to
appeal to younger collectors. However, the younger collectors
are quickly getting priced out of the market for these as the
packs and boxes are coming out fairly pricey.
They have Super Team cards just like football does, first day
production and also a beam team cards (27 in all). Odds are
1:24 for each of the inserts, so you're supposed to get one of
each per box. That is what happened to me, although a dealer
I spoke with opened one box and got 2 of each, 1 of each near
the top of the box and 1 of each near the bottom. Mine were
all near the middle. It may be that the inserts are randomly
dumped into a box fairly close together and there is a chance
that you can get 2 each if your first ones are near the bottom
(or top). Your mileage may vary however, as another guy told
me today he open one box and got two super team cards and no first
day and no beam team.
The photography and quality of shots is pretty good (imho), but
I can't decide whether I like the overall look. A mixed reaction.
I'll post some more details once I sort through them, some tidbits:
- You won't make a series 1 set from one box (180)
- There are several subsets within the series 1 set:
- Draft picks (saw Bradley but like ultra no webber mash hardaway)
- triple/doubles
- higHCourt (players who are stoned I guess)(ugly backs)
Oh yeah, prices: $60/box and $3/pack, but this is "just came
out gotta have it" hype. Without most of the big rookies, I
don't see series 1 holding up, unless it truely is in short
supply (doubt it, I'm sure we'll see WalMart jumbos eventually
and the wharehouses have yet to get their shipments). I think
people were hungry for new basketball, ultra looks the same so they
are chasing SC (at least this week). I can't believe the beam teams
will hold up as a big deal this year, although I've already seen
the Shaq beam team out for $100, know of one that sold for $65.
John's SportsCards in Tyngsboro got them yesterday, had them out
for $2/pack, today at lunch the posted price was $2.25, although
John almost always gives people a price break when you buy several
packs. He may keep bumping up the price though as other dealers
are buying boxes from him and charging $3/pack and also because
his case is rapidly disappearing.

| Dealer I talked to said that cases are already over $1100 but he
agrees with Jeff...it's the early hype. He said retail and jumbo's will
be out with in the week.
