| Alex, You pose an age old problem. Let me speak first as a dealer
that needs to make a specific % on each sale.
DEALER BUY PRINCIPLE: When I buy I refer to Beckett to ensure that I
can make the profit percent without exceeding
Beckett's price.
DEALER SELL PRINCIPLE: When I sell I ignore Beckett - I'm in this
for profit and if I've done the buy thing right
then I'm below Beckett anyway.
DEALER FLEX PRINCIPLEL: If someone pushes me hard to reduce my prices
(already below Beckett's) I trot it out show it
to them and say NFW.
Now as a collector.
COLLECTOR BUY PRINCIPLE: I"m trying to complete the Philadelphia
Carmels Team cards ( 1890's ). Frankly if it
Nr Mt - I buy it no questions asked no
bargaining, no guide. I ask to see the item,
if it's the condition that I need (even if
it's a double that I'm buying just in
case someone wants to trade) I smile and say
sold.
COLLECTOR SELL PRINCIPLE: Oximoron. Collectors don't sell.
Collector of new stuff: (1976 +)If you have to do this then buy
condition and shop!!!! shop!!!!!!! shop!!!!!!
Just Curious- Have you read the Becketts, Gone over each page, looked
carefully for his information on the pricing of regional issues, Older
cards ect. It's worth the time.

604.2 | what about these examples: | UHUH::SOKOL | | Mon Nov 08 1993 17:08 | 25 |

Hi Mike,
I understand that principles, but I don't get how this
Dr.Beckett comes up with those prices. For example:
all those UD Heroes sets, they end up less than
half from the introduction price. Even I figured
it out by now.
93-94 UD basketball: the most expensive cards is
Shawn Bradley so far, but he clearly has no "big"
future in NBA.
92-93 Basketball season: UD, Ultra and Stadium Club
went a bit down after the introduction, but HOOPS
and Skybox (???) went up, when clearly was no
problems with quantities.
We both can name many more examples of strange price
movements, which I can't simply explain.
\well, just trying to understand the things so I can follow that
hobby better.
\thx, alex

Most insert sets always come down in price after awhile. SCD had ads
for the UD Iooss set for 29$. Lots of bargains can be found if you
wait awhile. When it first comes out lots of people will pay higher
to get it.
I bet most of the Beckett, SCD, Tuff Stuff prices are based on
dealer input and investor input. They don't want to see prices go
down. Afterall, would you fill out a survey form to show lower
prices if you were a dealer ? Probably not. Would you want to fill
out the survey to show higher prices ? Probably.
You can probably take a Tuff Stuff or SCD and go through a Beckett's
and find items selling for much lower than Beckett's low price.

Found this article, about Becketts shipping schedule, in Internet this
morning. I thought it was interesting so I included it.

The Baseball Beckett is shipped on the first Monday of every
month. Dealers might get them by Wednesday if it's first class
delivery. Home subscribers get it via 3rd class mail so it
usually comes Friday, Saturday, or the following Monday.
(FYI - the Becketts are shipped alphabetically on each MONDAY.
Baseball, then Basketball, then Football, then Hockey)
