558.0. "1993 Leaf Baseball" by FUTURE::JST_ONGE (John St.Onge USDSL DTN 275-2715) Wed May 12 1993 21:24

This note is for the 1993 Leaf Baseball Set. It seems to be getting a
lot of hype lately and pre-sell ads in SCD have boxes in the 75-100$
range. While I haven't opened a box yet, I did open a few packs and
while the cards are okay, they're not worth the hype. I don't care
for the "silver Leaf ribbon" on front and felt they could have put
the silver foil team logo on front instead. The backs are better than
the fronts with a "city landmark" backdrop behind the player.

There's only 220 cards in the first series, three insert sets - Frank
Thomas (these look a lot like his insert nickname card in the Triple
Play set), a Heading for the Hall insert set and the normal Leaf Gold
Rookies - nothing to write home about as far as design goes, but the
    player selection could push it.

Since there's only 220 cards in the first series, you'd think you'd
come close to a set, but then we're talking Leaf / Donruss and their
collation is pretty lousy usually. However with these guys chances of
getting six Frank Thomas's or six Rob Murphy's are about the same, as
opposed to some companies where you wonder if they pull their stars
and stick in extra Rob Murphy's.

One thing I noticed with the cards is that in pack the cards curved
one way and in the other pack, they curved a different way. By this I
mean they curve like a box of 1987 Topps cards that have been sitting
    around for awhile.

    Overall 3 sticks out of 5 on the Gum-O-Meter. I definitely wouldn't
pay the prices they're asking right now even if it was scarce, but
then I'm speaking from a collecting viewpoint.

I talked to Al at Collector's Coop. He's had them out at $2.25 a
pack and they aren't selling. Then again very little is happening
in the card world for him. Superman returns is carrying him.

Guess they'll be coming down in price at other places too. I can't get
to excited over $75 a box as Walt saw in NY this weekend. Glad we
got ours for "only" $47 a box......

Coallation is LOUSY!! I came up 22 cards short and didn't get the
regular Frank T. card! I did have 1 card that was torn (which is
getting sent back). I aslo got 2 Gold Rookies, 2 Heading for the
Hall of Fame, and 3 Frank Thomas inserts.
558.3FUTURE::JST_ONGEJohn St.Onge USDSL DTN 275-2715Thu May 13 1993 21:3021
While 47$ (Thanks Steve !) beats 75$, to me it's still kind of steep.
I don't blame Al either since I know he has to make a living, but
these card companies better come back down to earth on some of the
prices they're starting to ask for stuff. I think they also believe
that by sticking in 10 insert sets people will go out and purchase
more boxes. Well, if the box is 15$ I might do it, but not at 50$,
especially when there's no guarantee on how many inserts you might
get. And you can't tell me that every person who opened a box of
Fleer Ultra II basketball or Stadium Club II basketball for 80$ or so
wasn't disappointed not getting a Shaq insert. They didn't spend the
80$ to get the set, they spent it to get a Shaq insert.

I try to buy all the baseball sets, but when they come out the gate
at 40$ for a dealer cost I'm starting to shy away and I'll take the
chance of waiting now for some things to come down. Dealers have to
move it at some point to be able to purchase the next hot thing
so they'll drop the prices. And we're talking about the guys who deal
directly with the companies. No wonder they have fights at BJ's and
    Sam's.

I saw these cards and I can't say enough about them, their a class
card, and I think that Leaf out did themselfs for 1993. I've seen
them for $2.00 and up as high as $2.75,I'll wait till the season is at
the half way mark before I start buying,I had the chance to buy them
Steve, but I was spening money on the Shaq Hype......................

I like the backs alot, they are different and although I usually vote
for more stats than pictures on the back, I have to admit to liking
these backs just for the backdrop pictures, fun to look at if not
    much to read.

Does anyone know what special insert cards there are in the Jumbo
packs ? I saw some Jumbo packs last night at Walmart, they were going
for $2.96 a pack, there were 20 cards in the pack. Just for the hell
of it I bought 1 pack and I got a Nolan Ryan (Heading for the Hall),
this has to be the best card that I got so far, I've been snake bit
ever since I bought these cards, no Thomas cards at all........

I saw it at Center Sports in Billerica. Wax packs only. No idea on
number of cards or cost. I was kind of upset when I saw it. I am
sick of these sets that are never complete........Series I, Then 2,
then updates, I'm sure they'll be an update to an update anytime soon

I think it's 88 cards to the set, to bring the total to the traditional
    Leaf size of 528 (220 in each series 1 & 2).

Has some 5 more gold leaf rookies, including Piazza and some other
inserts too. I'll try and get the details tomorrow.

If you can believe their math on one insert odds, you come out
to slightly under 6300 12/box cases as the production run. They
gave the odds of finding a special 5x7 of frank inserts and then
they stated they made 7500 each of the 10 thomas inserts. I think
it's one per case so 12 goes into 75000, 6250 times. I'll try and
    verify this info tomorrow too.

The Leaf Update set is 110 cards - numbered 441-550. I think Leaf does
    110 card sheets.
