549.0. "1993 Score Baseball" by FUTURE::JST_ONGE (John St.Onge USDSL DTN 275-2715) Tue Apr 06 1993 21:31
I opened three boxes of 1993 Score Baseball (the kind that's still
affordable). Anyway, there's only one series this year - 660 cards
in the set. There's 16 cards per pack, although one of the cards is
part of a 90 card Score Select Insert set of League Leaders so there
are many stars in the set including doubles or triples of stars like
Frank Thomas, Roger Clemens etc.
The regular set once again has many subsets, including an 11 card
Dream Team set, 22 caricature All-Stars (this theme is getting old),
a 6 card Award Winners set, Draft Picks and a 10 card Highlight set.
While the fronts don't show it, the text on the back detail most of
the trades or free agent signings. Design isn't too bad, but nothing
to write home about.
For the chase cards, there's a 28 card "The Franchise" insert set.
According to the packs, you should not get less than 1 per 24 packs,
but in two of the three boxes I opened I got three and two in the
other box. In the two boxes that Dan McAuliffe picked up for me I
got Frank Thomas, Juan Gonzalez, Ken Griffey Jr. and two Dennis
Eckersley. I'm going to have Dan pick my boxes up all the time ;-)
In the other box I got a Kirby Puckett and two Don Mattingly's. This
is a fairly nice insert set.
Overall three sticks out of five on the Gum-o-meter. So if you want
to pick up something cheap without worrying that you spent 50$, 60$
and you didn't get a Shaq, a Score wax box will bring back some of
the fun of opening wax packs.
