501.0. "Help in Pennant Identification ?" by NWD002::TUTAK_PE (Hall of Foam 1992 Inductee) Mon Nov 09 1992 11:50
I can't get into ANTIQUE_COLLECTIBLES, so I'll put it here first.
I recently purchased a pair of pennants, cheap...but I'm having a bear
of a time finding out what they represent.
The pennants are about 2.5 feet long, (12 in. wide at the base) each.
They are of a very thick felt, with the typical tails at the wide end.
The lettering is white (felt cutout) on a red background, stating
"INDIANAPOLIS". There is also a large logo in the lower left hand corner
of a diamond with the letters "IND" inside. The lettering in the logo
is of a typesetting you don't see anymore...the letters are notched.
I know they date back to the 30s. Perhaps a remote chance of being
older than that. But what are they from ?
Is there an Indianapolis University, or College ? Could they be from
the old AAA Indians ? I know Indianapolis had a Federal League
franchise in 1914, but that would be too much to hope for.
Anyone from the heartland (or anywhere else) that can point me in the
right direction for some information ?
Thanks...
Peter
PS..I mentioned that there are two pennants, and there are. But the
second is like a left-handed version of the first, with the letters
going from small to large as one reads it, and the logo being in the
large end. Unusual ?

| Could they be used at the Indianapolis 500 Raceway?? I never heard of
anything out there either, except maybe an old basketball team way back
when. Someone out there should know if a team existed back in the 30's
or early 40's.
