492.0. "Upper Deck Heroes Cover Cards - The True Story !!" by FUTURE::JST_ONGE (John St.Onge USDSL DTN 275-2715) Fri Oct 09 1992 13:56
-rjk pointed me to some interesting information in the latest Beckett's
basketball. One of the letters stated something like:
"I heard that the Jerry West cover card was printed in the same amount as
the other cards in this Heroes of Basketball subset -- is this true?".
Beckett's went to Upper Deck and asked them about it. They confirmed that
the West header card was printed in the same quantity as the other West
Heroes cards. They went on to add the following interesting information:
The ONLY time a heroes cover card is printed in shorter quantity than the
other cards in that set is when there is another SP* (short print) card
in the set. The cover card and the SP card alternate on printer sheets,
meaning there's half as many cover cards and SP cards as there are the
regular heroes cards from that set.
So for example:
- In 1992 UD Baseball (low), there was SP3 (Deion). This meant that the
WIlliams cover cards are only twice as prevelant as the cards numbered
#28-36.
- In 1992 UD Baseball (hi), there is an SP4, however, it is one of the UV
coated cards, so it shouldn't have alternated with the Bench/Morgan
cover card (different stock, printing process, etc.), so it should be
just as predominant as the other Bench/Morgan Heroes cards (#37-45).
- In 1992 UD Football (low), there was no SP* card, so the cover card was
printed in the same quantity as the regular Payton Heroes cards
(#19-27).
So logically, realistically, whatever, the *most* any cover card should
cost, is twice what a regular Heroes cards cost - and only if there's an
SP card in the set, otherwise it should be similarly priced as the other
Heroes cards.

| Except......
That some folks hoard the cards to create artifical demand causing the
street price (not Becketts) to go up.
Want some Ryan Cover Cards?
Mike
PS tell ROY that his BIL's cards are on the way.

| Mike, it's nice to know when a dealer tells you something like there's
only 1 per case, it's much rarer than the regular heroes cards etc. etc.
That way you can say "Listen you lying scumbag - according to UD they
print this many ...".

| I don't know if this will help. I open 100's of cases of
UD. At this point I'm having (and had) much more success finding
Heros, holos and SP's in the Grocery store cases. Those cases are
the ones with a stand and 24 compartments that look like a sorting
tray.

| Mike, is that all sports or just baseball. It seems like the insert
cards (Heroes, holos, SP's etc) for baseball are much easier to find
than say hockey or football.

| Some new Heroes Sets coming out:
Wilt Chamberlain - UD First Series Basketball
Dan Marino - UD Second Series Football
Willie Mays - UD 1993 First Series Baseball
The Chamberlain and Mays sets look pretty nice. I would've like to have
seen Upper Deck stick to older, retired players instead of using
players who are still playing such as Dan Marino, Wayne Gretzky etc. I
would've like to have seen a set on Jim Brown maybe. I'd love to see a
set on Sandy Koufax. Do you think maybe there'll be a set on Mickey
Mantle now that he's signed with Upper Deck exclusively ? Rick G. wants
to know ...
