479.0. "1992 Basketball Draft Picks" by GOOEY::MCEVOY () Tue Sep 08 1992 09:53

    The 1992 Basketball Draft Pick packs and sets are starting to
    hit the market. How about we use this note for discussing all of
    the 1992 Basketball Draft Pick sets.

    Classic
    -------
    There are 100 cards in this set, 10 cards per pack. One guy at
    BG had sets for 12$ and boxes for 36$. Classic has the exclusive
    on Shaquille ONeal, so these will probably be the hottest draft
    pick cards this year. As in the past, there are 10 LP insert cards,
    including ONeal. I believe there are about 56000 of each of the LP
    cards. I also got a "Preview" card from their baseball set,
    supposed to be one of 12000. In addition to this years draft picks,
    there are a couple "flashbacks" to previous years, I think I saw
    Billy Owens, D. Mutombo, Stacey Augmon, and one other. The cards are
    nice, UV coated, sharp design. These cards seem to be out in other
    parts of the country, but the NE dealers have yet to receive their
    shipments, so they will probably come down in price.

    StarPics
    --------
    There are 90 cards in this set, 9 per pack. I picked up a couple
    packs for 1$ each. These cards are also UV coated, an improvement
    over previous years. I have not seen factory sets, so I'm not sure
    if they're doing those. Each pack has a contest card that could win
    you a prize, possibly lunch with a draft pick (Lunch with Christian
    Laettner? no thanks). There's also some flashback cards, I got a
    Kendall Gill, and coaches cards including Bobby Knight.

    Shaq is until the end of the year, which means now that he's signed
    a contract that the other sets can include him, right?
479.2not sure DDIF::MCEVOYWed Sep 09 1992 09:5829
    Nobody seems to know for sure what the deal is with Shaq. I think
    you're right, somehow, Classic has him "exclusively", I believe til
    the end of the calendar year. Someone else said that nobody can
    produce him til a series II.

    does that mean that if a company waits til January to put out their
    series I, then its ok to put Shaq in it?

    does that mean that a company could slam out a series one this week,
    then a series two next week just so they can be the first pro card
    with Shaq on it?

    I don't know for sure. I guess the only way to tell would be
    to see his Classic contract and/or his Magic contract. I had always
    thought that once you signed an NBA contract, then you're in the players
    association, and you're fair game to anyone with an NBA card license.

    Maybe that's still true, but maybe not. I think a player could
    probably challenge the players association if he had enough clout
    and/or lawyers. Maybe ONeal delayed his entry into the players
    association?

    If anyone knows for sure, please post that info here.

    Also, I forgot to mention that the factory Classic set contains an
    extra card of Laettner that I believe is only available in the factory
    set. Different than his LP card.

479.3How many sets per boxCARTUN::PAVLOCKThu Sep 10 1992 22:019
    Has anyone bought a box of the Classic Basketball draft pics? I assume
    it's 36 packs with 10 cards per pack, right?

    If you bought a box, what's the collation like? How many sets were you
    able to make?

    Regards,
    Denny

    I heard 2nd hand the collation ain't great, one set plus about
    10 short of a second (you would expect at least two complete
    sets with 360 cards, your mileage may vary). Though if one of your
    quadruples/pentuples/sextuples is the shaq, I suppose your collation
    was pretty darn good.

479.5Breakin Up is hard to doSONATA::KELLYTue Sep 22 1992 10:199
    I broke a couple of cases (20 boxes) and got pretty good colation.
    Cards #5 and 34-39 and 76 seem to be the shortest. Lot's of Shaque.

    The gadget cards average 3 per box Card 1 (Shaque) in the gadgets
    is hard to find. The baseball inserts are also real hard to find.

479.101992-93 Front RowRAB::MCEVOYFri Oct 30 1992 13:0918
    1992-93 Front Row Draft Picks are out. I picked up a pack out of
    curiosity. The cards are pretty nice, I think they're better than last
    years. Last year's were glossy, and a lot of the photos were kind
    of blurry. This year's cards are not glossy and the photos are better.
    The fronts have a purple border, the backs vary. I don't think
    Front Row cares too much about consistancy in their cards. Some of
    the backs have additional photos, some have "career highlights",
    some have stats. There are several cards of each player, the fronts
    all look the same, just different photos; some of pictures have the
    players in their "Front Row" jerseys. The set features players
    from both this year's draft and last years draft (whom they already
    issued cards for twice last year.)

    They're calling this set the "Dream Picks" set, it also features
    inserts with autographs. All in all, better than last year, some
    real nice pictures.
