433.0. "1971 Topps Super baseball cards" by CSCMA::LEDONNE (This space intentionally left blank) Wed May 13 1992 10:29

I've searched through this entire note looking for information
about Topps Super cards. I have some from 1971 and am trying to
get a fix on their value so that I can trade some of them for
things that I need to build other sets that I'm trying to complete.
While these cards were mentioned a few times, I couldn't find any
pricing estimates or where to find them. I've checked a lot of the
publications, like Tuff Stuff and the Beckett's unabridged Bible.
The Beckett's book lists every damn thing that was ever issued
except for these cards. It lists the 69 Topps Super set, which
were the same in name only to the 70 and 71 releases. It even
mentions the 70 and 71 cards in the header paragraph for the 69
set, but then fails to list them later.

If someone has recent information or knows where to get it,
please send me mail or post it in this note so that others may
	also be so enlightened.

	Thanks,
	Ric

433.1Couple of suggestions for .0CARTUN::PAVLOCKWed May 13 1992 13:4914
    Ric,

Here's two suggestions for your dilemma:

    	- Compare the '69 Topps regular set prices to the '71 regular set
prices for the cards your interested in pricing. Then compare the same
players card between the '69 regular and the '69 super set. You've got
3 prices, you can estimate the 4th price for the '71 super set card.

    	- Write or call Beckett's and ask them why the reference the '70
and '71 super set but chose not to publish prices in the annual book.

    Regards,
    Denny

Well, I finally found them listed in the SCD annual price guide.
The whole 1971 set is listed at $200 NrMT, but I didn't have time
to gauge their prices relative to Beckett's in general.

I would have done that except that the 69 set is completely
different from the 70 and 71 sets, except for the name. The
	69 set cards are 2" x 3" whereas the 70 and 71 are postcard
size (something like 3" x 5"). Also, I think the 69 set is much
more scarce, so that the relative prices aren't comparable.

	I'm planning on doing that.

	Thanks for the suggestions!

The 71 Supers are listed in the large price guide that I picked up a
couple of years ago. The prices do not move that much in the guide
since these sets are not often bought and sold and their pricing is not
reported. Sometimes you can find good deals on them and sometimes they
are priced outrageously since people run into the problem you have
described. But they are listed in the SCD baseball price guide book.
If I remember correctly, commons are less than a buck while some of the
stars list for $5-$10. But they may be priced higher at shows since
the "book" does not change much. Some dealers try to get $25, for example,
    for Yaz.

I've searched high and low for a Rico Petrocelli upgrade for my set. I
may want to upgrade others. Plus I know of another person that may be
interested in picking up a few for his set.
