367.0. "The Impossible Dream record album" by DSSDEV::CLOUTIER (Eamus, O Tibialia Rubentia!) Thu Dec 12 1991 14:26

    	I've looked all through this conference and can't find a discussion
    	anywhere about this, so...

    	Does anyone know the value of the 1967 record album, "The
    	Impossible Dream", a compilation of Red Sox highlights from
    	the '67 pennant-winning year? I've heard all sorts of estimates
    	ranging from high to low. Does anyone have a definitive idea?

    	Also, I have a copy of this in excellent condition if anyone
    	is interested in making an offer.

367.1Try Fred's Auction.IAMOK::GASPARONIWed Dec 18 1991 12:577
    I saw one go at an auction in Concord about a year ago. It went for
    around $25 to $45 at the time. I know it wasn't real high, with not
    alot of interest. Looks like a good item to consign to an auction,
    which would bring you in about 80% of the take. Just an idea, in case
    there isn't alot of interest. Fred Harris of the Concord Card Shop
    takes in Consignments for his store, or auction, he takes 20% of the
    kill, his number is (508) 371-2300.

    20%???????

    That's outrageous.

    The highest I've heard of before was 10%, but I'm not very worldly
    in the way of auctions either.

367.320% is Standard??IAMOK::GASPARONIThu Dec 19 1991 14:006
    I thought 20% was pretty standard in the industry. I know a shop in
    NH takes 20% on Consigned goods. I dont necessary agree, but its
    better than holding something you dont have any use for. Auctions are
    becoming very popular around here. And very unethical to say the
    least! Watch out for those "Plants" in the audience. They bid up the
    prices and back off once the item is high enough.

    Mr. Mint only takes 7%.

    Most auctions I've seen listed in SCD (the results), usually only
    include a 10% buyer's premium for the auction "house".

    I always assumed 7-10% was average.

    If I can sell my $1,000 (price guide) card for $800 -- I'll find
    a collector who wants it. I still don't get the $200 but neither
    does the auction house. Sure I have to do the work myself, and I
    may not realize a possible over-bid, but 20%?

367.5Typical auction house buyer/consignor %'sREMACP::RICHARDSONFri Dec 20 1991 09:257

    re: Auctions

    You, the buyer, will pay from 0% - 10% (usually either/or) above the
    purchase price. The auction house charges the consignor typicaly
    20%.  Many have a standard of a single item/lot selling under $500
    they charge 20%, $500-$999 = 15%, over $1000 = 10% commission.
367.6LP titled, "The Big Red Machine"SMURF::BREAUWhere was Bush when Reagan slept?Tue Dec 31 1991 12:1811

    I also have a similar item that I don't know the value of, and would
    consider offers for. It's an unopened LP about the season of the 1970
    Cincinnati Reds, titled "The Big Red Machine"; it has a cartoon picture
    on the front featuring the Reds players driving a big red machine
    waving bats and shooting baseballs. It's narrated by Jim McIntyre and
    Joe Nuxhall.

    I imagine this would fetch a better price in the Cincy area?

    I have some things out at stores on consignment. I tell the shop owner
    what i want for the card. The shop owner marks it up over that point
    and keeps the difference.
