Went to a show tonight in R.I., I saw the UD hockey cards for the
first time. They do seem to be a better looking cards then last year,
not that last years was bad.
I won't usually comment about this, but, feel if I save one collectors
a$$, it'll be worth it. They where selling for $1.75-$2.00 a pack, $65
a box. This is the stupidest thing that I've every seen, but, you know
what? They where selling.... Ooh, they also had some Holograms and yes,
they where asking $10ea. There the same as the UD Football hologram.
I received by issue of Baseball cards news in the mail today, and one
play was selling them for $25/box. Which means in a month to six weeks
we'll see them for $18-$20/box.
I know Roy has said the time and time again, but, don't be sucked into
buying these for anything over .75/pack.
Really people this is getting crazy!

I saw them this evening in a normally fairly pricy shop for $1.25/pack,
$39/box (which means even now they should be less at shows this
weekend). They are nice looking, the holograms are 100% improvement
from last years holos. The holos this year are a subset of the
trophy winners (this shop has a few for $2 a piece).
Alot of typical UD here, typical UD backs (nice), same white stock,
nice front photos and hockey heros subset 1-9 featuring Brett Hull
(wonder if there is a tenth cover card?). "Find the Hull" with 2500
signatures Hulls out there somewhere. Appears to be much like
football, 500 card set, perhaps just one series, the pack says
nothing about this being series I. Don't know if there will be any
high number set like last year.
Please send me all your extra #455's.

Here in Ottawa they are also starting to arrive. The lowest price from
a dealer I have seen here is $64 (plus tax) Canadian for a wax box!
Talk about crazy. I can mail-order them in for about $44 for a
wax box from Toronto or Montreal. I visited one of the better dealers
in town last night and they said they would be selling some hand-sorted
sets for about $75-80 in about three weeks (just in time for XMAS).
From what I have read there will again be a HI# or update set of about
150 cards. I don't expect to see it though until March. I remember it
took them an awful long time last year to ship the HI # set.

Not exactly central Mass., but up near the cowhampshire boarder

try ordering them by mail from one of the multitude of advertisers

$18-25 sounds good to me. I don't think I would go higher than that.
We're only talking about paper and ink. Let's get real. Some of these
dealers are out of control. When some of the older sets start to look
more reasonable than the brand new stuff we've got problems.

I completed the #1 - 500 set this weekend and I agree that the cards
do look better than last years. For some of the cards they took the
picture in landscape mode giving you a wide angle action shot of the
player shooting or blocking a shot.
I also completed the 1 - 9 subset of Hull. For anyone who gets these,
do hang on to them. Apparently Upper Deck was making it very difficult
to put this set together. A friend of mine bought five wax boxes and
only collected 7 of the 9 card subset. He also go a card that is
not part of the regular 1 - 500 numbered set. It is labelled "SP1"
but I can't remember what player is was (Gretzky perhaps?).
I thought I had the whole set but I guess not! Does anyone know
anything about the "SP" cards and how many there are?

Upper Deck places one SP1 (Special) card in every
series of there sets. The starting price is usually
around $12-$15, then a month goes by and there down
to $10, and stay there till the next years cards come
out, then they drop down to $6-$8...

You may be further away from the 'whole' set than you think.
There should also be an unumbered Hull hero, often called
the cover card, making that a ten card subset. If it follows
the football pattern, it will be a short print and much tougher
to come by than 1-9.
How did you do on the holograms?

.RE : .15, .16, & .17
Regarding the Hull subset :
Perhaps my friend was just unlucky with his wax boxes...
I got the impression that a couple of the cards from the subset would
be tough to get while the rest of the subset would be found easier to
collect from the foil packs... Thus teasing you into finishing your
complete subset. I did get the Hockey Heroes cover card in addition to
the nine card subset but I did not think that Hull was on the card.
I will check that out tonight.
Was there an "SP" card for last year's 90/91 UD Hockey set? If so I
missed that one.
I personally do not have any of the Holograms yet and I don't know
what their frequency was for a wax box. Will try to look into that.

The football "title" card (cover card, the one with no number), did
not have Joe Montana on it either. It had a graphic design with
"Heroes of Football" emblazoned across it. Thus it being called the
"title" card. Be careful, when you buy/order a HOF (heroes of
football) subset, you might not get this card.
No, I don't believe there were any SP1 cards last year.

Only three holograms have been released so far. The next three will

The UD spokesperson I read the interview with said that just like

They do seem thin, but then upper deck has always been on the thin
side.
I discovered by buying a couple packs that the French "English Edition"
that I asked about a few replies back is the same cards as the standard
US version. Only the box and packs have bi-lingual writing on them,
cards are the same. No all-star voting insert which was actually
kind of refreshing.
I was kind of hoping someone else would mention this but what the heck:
The rumor mill is grinding that UD has 'pulled a ProSet' and will be
yanking St. Eric from the 2nd and 3rd, etc. production runs. Seems
Score is a bit upset, despite UD having the Canada Cup rights. So the
rumor goes that card #9 will become a real live SP.
At first it would seem to be run-of-the-mill crap to hike up current box
prices or to move product at the current price levels. Although it
would also seem to follow that then you would see prices drop off
big time in a few weeks, as presumably the boxes without Lindros
would be much less attractive (the card is $7 in the latest Beckett's).
So I began to question whether this rumor would really benefit
dealers in the long run (and therefore maybe it isn't pure rumor/hype).
Has anyone else been treated to this bs?

A number of you have asked me what the E* cards are in my want-list.
Rather than answer you all seperately in mail, here's an answer for
the masses.
We (my brother-in-law and I) went to a show this weekend. A dealer
though showed us the E cards (cards numbered E1, E2, E3, ...). Had
a full set he did. Wanted $100 for the set. Said they were ultra
rare, hard to come by (yet he had a full set ... bwah ha ha ha ha!).
What they are is cards of "Euro-stars" (stars in the NHL who have
come to the NHL via Europe; Federov, some others whose names I can't
remember much less, spell or pronounce).
My BIL opened one box, and got five "E" cards in the box. One was
E1, and the highest number one was E14. So I don't know if there
are more than 14 of them.
There were *NO* Brett Hull "HOH" cards in this box (he only got one
in his other box, which contained NO "E" cards).
Here's what I believe, and I'll tell you why.
The boxes with Brett Hull on the bottom have HOH cards in 'em. The
one box with Hull on the bottom that my BIL opened had HOH card(s)
in it/them.
The boxes with Gretzky on the bottom have "E" cards in 'em. The
box with Gretzky that my BIL opened had "E" cards in it.
I believe that "E" cards will be just as available as the HOH
cards, just different boxes.
BTW, if anyone comes across these, I'd *really* like to finish this
set for my BIL as a xmas present, so any/all help will be GREATLY
appreciated. I'll even pay for the cards ...

Nobody but roy's BIL has gotten any of these cards, at least
of the people that I have spoken to. At the andover show one dealer
with a ton of UD hockey (opened) told me that a few E cards "mistakenly"
got into some early wax boxes, but that in fact the E cards were due to
come out in the cello packs only, ala silver sluggers. Another
hype/subset/gimmick to get us to buy a repackage of the same cards,
UD is getting a bit out of hand...
roy, good luck finding these before xmas, I'll keep looking for them

Jeff is indeed correct. I saw this on the usenet yesterday. One

In them, he said he ("on average") found either a hull (heroes of
hockey) or an "E" card. the "E" cards averaged about 1 every 2
"jumbo" packs.
So Jeff's information/educated guess is likely correct. They will
be an insert set in the jumbo packs. Anyone seen the jumbo packs

AW5 (Bourque) AW6 (Gretzky) and AW7 (Belfour) are out now. This
leaves AW4, AW8, and AW9. I may have mixed up 6 and 7, but the
two are definitely Gretzky and Belfour.
This little tidbit from today's USA Today:
CARD WARS: Upper Deck Company filed suit against Topps Commany in
California Superior Court Tuesday over the hockey cards
rights of Russian players Vladimir Malakhov, Alexei Zhamnov,
Dmitri Siliminov, Alexander Semak and Viacheslav Kozlov.
Both Upper Deck and Topps claim to have agreements with
those players to produce their likeness on cards. Card
companies can print any player who is a member of the NHL
Player's Association but need player permission from anyone
who hasn't played an NHL game.
Exclusives with "rookies" greatly increase the demand for
hockey sets in the collecting world.
The NHL, which used to pay little attention to collecting,
now is extremely vigilant in monitoring card companies.
Next season, it's expected the NHL and NHLPA won't allow
commingling of NHL players with players who haven't yet
played in the league (sorry Score and Mrs. Lindros! 8^).
"Topps would like us to believe that the personally signed
individual agreements, which we hold, are invalid", said
Upper Deck President Richard McWilliam. "Our legal counsel
tells us otherwise".
[end of article]
1) Topps agreement with these players is through O-Pee-Chee, their
Canadien subsidiary. These players appear/appeared in the Russian
Red Army insert set in this year's (and last year's?) OPC Hockey
card set. I wonder how/if the Canadien portion of this affects
this.
2) This is why ProSet had to pull CC3 and CC4. These two players
hadn't yet appeared in an NHL game (I actually think the minimum
is six games to become a member of the NHLPA). Their agents
found out, and said "Send us an offer ProSet". The bidding got
too high, ProSet bowed out, and pulled the cards. I wonder if
ProSet will print these and make them available to the public
once they're members of the NHLPA ... ?
3) Yeah, vigorously monitoring my ars! I count 15 major sets
coming out this year of Hockey, never MIND all the draft picks
sets (Classic, Classic French, Arena, Arena French, Smokey's,
Smokey's French, Star Pics ...)

Oh yeah, and one other thing. There's a vicious rumor going around,
and dealers are using it to drive up the SELL price of the Lindros
Card (#9 - Canada Cup subset) in this year's UD set. They're claiming
that Score is suing UD over their using his likeness when they have
an exclusive contract. This is NOT TRUE. Upper Deck has a contract
that allows them to produce cards of the players in the Canada Cup
in their Canada Cup uniforms. This card will NOT be pulled from
production as the rumor-mongers would have you believe.

Regarding holograms, I suppose that since they are of award winners
that you could make an educated guess about the last 3 by looking at
the award winners who aren't yet holograms.
For example;
Mario Lemieux got the Con Smythe for playoff MVP
Ed Belfour got 3 awards (Calder, Vezinna and one other)
Which leaves one to squirm on....

FWIW...
Up here (Ottawa, Ont. Canada) McDonalds is pushing UD hockey cards for
a "limited time".
For $.29 (29 cents) with the purchase of any soft drink you get a pack
of hockey cards. Each paqck contains 3 cards and one hologram.
The cards are UD with McDonalds splashed around on them including a
little mettalic golden arches symbol on the back.
There are 25 cards and 6 (?) holograms to the set.
(I have the checklist at home)
I'm not normally one for holograms (until now, I owned none) but I must
admit, these are beautiful in their detail.
Are these things available at U.S. McDonald's?
(Just wondering if I'm gonna have anyone to trade with...)

I went to MacDonalds recently, and they don't have the hockey
cards/hologram pack "deal" that you mentioned. That is not to
say that they will have it in the future, but not so far.
The last "deal" they had at MacDonalds was the 3 different
Indiana Jones movies for $6 each.
If it turns out that the MacDonalds USA is not going to carry
the deal you mentioned, I would be interested in trading with
you for the packs, and I'm sure there are probably many other

those packs as you can, because you're going to be busy trading.

Professor,
I am interested in unopened packs, although I am not
ruling out single cards and/or Holograms. Are you allowed to
buy just one pack every time you buy a coke, or can you buy
more than one pack when you buy a coke ?. If it's the latter,
that means a lot of cokes, and a lot of trips to MacDonalds.
If I had to guess, I would say it's the latter, because
that's how they would get the most money out of the consumer.
Either way, I would still be interested in trading.

The cards themselves didn't seem to be a big deal and the holograms

The story I heard from one dealer is that that some got into

ala the silver sluggers from baseball.
>How many packages in a Jumbo box? and how much in a Jumbo box going for?
Not sure.

Not quite, 10th one is the "cover card", no number on it, hockey
heroes logo across the front, short printed as compared to the
other 9 hero cards. I believe the signed ones are actually one
of the number hero cards, haven't heard of anyone getting one
though.

Correct.

I believe there are at least 20 of them.

The McDonald's UD hockey set promotion seems to be over now. Ran from aprox.
Dec.26 to Jan. 11
The set consists of 25 cards (including the checklist) and 6 holograms of the
All Star team.
You had to buy a drink @ aprox. $.89 to be able to buy a pack (3 cards & 1 Holo)
at an additional $.29.
VERY FEW instances of being able to get more than one pack with one drink. (I
was never able to.) (Trying to avoid the Domino's Pizza debacle, I guess)
According to a sports card column in the local newspaper this past weekend- the
set is going for $20. to $30. locally and apparently more south of the border.
Nice looking cards and great looking HOLO's.

Since there are 20 cards in the set, tha works out to $3.75 a
card. Of course Federov, Jagr, and a few of the others are worth
more. If you scale it down, I'd say the Federov would be about
$15 of that, scaling down to the "commons" being $3.75 each.

Allstars cards. There may be others that I do not remember. I got the
info from a dealer friend who showed me his order sheet.
Dealers are limited to 1 case of wax packs per order, they may also
order 1 case of factory sets. The prices to the dealer were 417.60 per
case, 24 boxes to a case, 36 packs a box. SRP is supposed to be .79
cents. Factory set cases are 675. I forget how many a case, but the
SRP is 18.95. Shipments of wax is supposed to begin march 5, factory
sets march 28.
With a dealer cost of 17 bucks a box, these guys make a lot of money on
this stuff. Look for it to be hyped hot like last year due to the fact
that supposedly all dealers can only order the one case.

Yeah, Jeff gave you some typical examples of oxymorons.
I'm not sure I used it 100% correctly in reference to UD, but what

When UD calls a set a "complete" set, it's not really
complete. In UD land, there is no such thing as a COMPLETE set.

card heroes subsets, game breaker holos gb1-gb9, SP1 Green fastest and
SP2 Shula 300, and one each unopened low series and high number packs.
(Fanatics might add promos, special event cards, superbowl handouts,

Subject: Lindros trading card a fake
Date: 17 Oct 92 00:37:05 GMT
TORONTO (UPI) -- A trading card of Philadelphia Flyers rookie Eric
Lindros is a fake, the NHL Players Association revealed Friday.
NHLPA director of licensing Ted Saskin said Upper Deck's Lindros card
No. 88 includes a photo of Lindros' head placed on the body of a
teammate. According to Saskin, Upper Deck waited until the card was
manufactured and was being distributed before telling the NHLPA the
picture was not genuine.
An Upper Deck spokesman did not return phone regarding the Lindros
card.
Lindros, who was the No. 1 pick of the 1991 draft by Quebec and
traded to Philadelphia last summer after refusing to play for the
Nordiques, is heralded as the next NHL superstar.

Yes it is the 92-93 UD hockey, I saw the same story in a local
saturday paper. This apparent fact is already being imbellished
by those hoping to profit from the situation. I have had two
different people repeat the news story, but then go on to say
UD is "pulling" the current #88 and will substitute another Lindros.
Maybe this is UD's way of hyping what would otherwise be a fairly
routine hockey issue for them.
jeff
p.s. How come none of hockey collecting maniacs has started a 92-93
note yet??

| I read an article yesterday that quoted UD. They said they were sorry
and they wouldn't stop printing that card and replace it cause it would
cause 2 short print cards that were collectible, and Lindros family
requested that they don't make this into a profitable situation for UD.

| There's no 92-93 note, so I'll put this here...
There's an add in today's USA Today sports section. All star ballot
and with 10 low-number wrappers, and $2, they'll send you 2 "limited
edition" All-star game commemorative sheets.
