331.0. "old LIFE magazines" by 20426::LANOUE (The world needs ditch diggers too you know...) Tue Oct 22 1991 11:48

    Hi collectors,

This certainly seems like an appropriate place to find an answer to
    the following;

My Father recently dug up some old Life magazines with ball players on
the covers, I've listed a few of them below. Does anyone know an
approximate value of these (mint) magazines or a publication that could
    give me an approximate value?

                     5/1/39 Joe DiMaggio
                     9/1/41 Ted Williams
                     4/1/40 John Rucker
                     4/25/38 John Winsett

Any help would be most appreciated.

    I don't know but ... Hall's Nostagia (617) 646-7757 in Arlington would
know ...they specialize in old mags.

    I hope this helps,
    Greg

I collect old Mags of Mickey Mantle. I have seen the Ted and Joe D.
at prices from $50 to $125, depending of course on condition. If mint,
I would say your looking at the high end. Of course, you will have to
find a nut like myself who is into collecting old Mags, and is a Joe D.
or Ted W fan. Don't expect a dealer to pay you anywhere close to those
prices though. Mags have not really caught on yet, but someday, they
will be in great demand. Just my observation.

The Ted Williams one looks like it just came off the stand today,
really is a beautiful item. I told him to hold onto it (maybe I'll
inherit it ;^)), like you said, someday maybe they'll catch on, they've
got to be pretty rare, especially the mint ones.

He also found a couple of the Mickey Mantle/Roger Marris issues, what
are those ones valued at? They're not in as good of condition that
they could be, somewhat faded, a couple of worn/folded corners, etc...

    much appreciated!

I have seen these issues going for the following prices at different
    nooths during sports shows:

    	DiMaggio: $90.00
    	Williams: $75.00
    	Rucker: not seen
Winsett: $23.00 (actually in an antique shop)

I've also seen the Mantle/Maris covers going for $40 at an antique
shop, but wasn't that an issue of Look magazine ? If you were to sell
to a dealer, I would expect him/her to pay about 50% ofthe above
mentioned prices for the Williams and DiMag, and about $25 for the
    Winsett.

I also found a copy of the Winsett in a small antique shop on the
Oregon Coast this past summer for $9, but the price was a fluke, and I
    picked it up.
