329.4 | skybox day glow zoo cards | DDIF::MCEVOY | | Fri Oct 25 1991 16:45 | 21 |
| I just picked up a couple packs of skybox 91-92 and I've have to
rate them below Hoops and Fleer.
In my opinion, these cards have the same problem that last years did.
Too much fluff, not enough substance. I'd still rather see a nice
real action photo of a player than a marked up super-hero comic
of a player.
The backs only list one year of stats and give us pictures of the
players visiting the zoo, etc.
The GQ cards are ridiculous, but they would probably look nice wrapped
up in a SKYbox dayglow shoelace available in mail order on the back of
the packs.
SKYbox does do a nice job of distributing the cards though. The cards
are well made and well packaged.
still waiting for Upper Deck,

329.5 | Skybox nicer than fleer | DNEAST::WOODMAN_MIKE | | Fri Oct 25 1991 21:26 | 5 |
| I picked up a box of Skybox for $23 at a show this weekend. Made a set
from one box. Also got 3 D.Coleman's. The card is nice, better than
Fleer, but not as nice as Hoops. Also saw Promo's for Upper Deck, they
look really good, but dealer said they would run $65 a box, a little to
high for my price range.

'but a dealer said they would run $65 a box'. yes they probably will
be near this *when they first come out*. You should be able to get a
box much cheaper, especially if your willing to be patient and ride
out the massive hype. Another alternative is pre-ordering from a
local card store that knows it is getting a few cases. I did this
here in southern nh the other day for $35/box for UD basketball.
This store owner you can bet is making darn good money and he is
(pre) selling them at $35/box. Another place I contacted near where
my parents live is pre-selling for $29/box. The real direct from
the factory cost must be somewhere like $15/box.
If you are patient you can find someone who is paying direct cost
and is only interested in a reasonable markup off that direct cost,
be it for UD basketball or anything.
Obligatory comment about the base note subject: Skybox is 'slick'
and this year's cards are 'hip', with it color and design wise.
There is something unappealing about a card that is in sync with the
latest fashion/color trends of the moment. maybe the younger kids
like this, but personally they don't do much for me as a "sportscard".
Maybe they should follow Leaf (and others) by putting out one set
of more serious action cards with more than one year of stats and also
do a fluff/affinity/hipster set. Yeah, just what we need another set!

Please continue this discussion in the UD basketball note.
There is an additional SkyBox card available this year. It is
included when you buy the new NBA videotape on Magic Johnson.
It is only available by purchasing the videotape.

Thanks for the quick response. If it weren't for this notesfile I'd probably
be spending 20-30% too much.

I agree ( with 329.12 )!! For example, UD basketball has been $40 -
$45 at every shop around here, but you can get them at a show for
$30!! And that was 3 weeks ago. Also, I noticed that the dealers
that "don't do shows", will always have derogatory comments about
them. Probably because they cut into their "profit margin".

One dealer at the BG show told me the card was worth $75..
But, who believes dealers... I would guess it would be priced
as the UD cover cards are.. $10-$15

For those interested, the 2-card blister pack insert set ("back to
back MVP's"; one card features magic/worthy, the other dumars/isaih
the MVP's from the back to back championships) from the HI number
sets, are available in EVERY blister pack.
All you need do is buy one blister pack, and you have both cards.
The cards are numbered "V" and "VI", continuing the numbering from
the 4-card low-number blister pack insert set.
