307.0. "1991-92 Fleer Basketball" by REFINE::ASHE (What happened to Vanity or Appolonia?) Tue Sep 10 1991 11:20

Dealer received 2 boxes of Fleer basketball over the weekend. A lot
more attractive fronts than last year. Backs are okay. I guess more
    are on their way....

And there will be more cards in the set this year (no rookies until
the update sets you investors you) -- and a number of subsets (bet
that thrills John no end) -- such as "pro vision", "schoolyard stars",
    "all-star game", etc.

5 cards in the pro-vision set (DRobinson is the only one I remember
off the top of my head).

I think the set is going to run around 240 cards or so.

FWIW, there will also be Fleer Ultra basketball ...

The Fleer Basketball has been expanded from last year 198
    cards to 240.
There are 4 subsets in this edition, which include a Fleer ALL-
STAR team (10 cards); and League Leaders (7 cards). This year
Fleer is also presenting SLAM DUNK Contestants, which include
Dee Brown (6 cards); and NBA All-STAR Highlights (6 cards).
The 27 coaches from each of the teams are also included this
year, and are arranged in the set as part of the team.
The limited, randomly inserted subsets this year include:
PRO-VISONS; NBA SCHOOL YARD STARS; and the ROOKIE SENSATIONS.

     1. Travis Mays, G
     2. Kendall Gill, G

The All-Star selections are bogus, if the list I saw was accurate.

How could ANY All-Star list leave off DRobinson?

I had my usual luck with Fleer. That's right -- everyone gets
a (near) complete set, or complte set -- whatever the norm is
for that issue -- EXCEPT me.

I was missing three cards, and didn't get doubles of any of
    the DRoby issues.

I talked to a bunch of dealers about these on Saturday, and
they all said, to a man, that they were getting 5 out of the
6 PV cards in EACH wax box. Well, I got 6 PV's, unfortunately
one was a double, and one was wax-stained.

Last year it took a LONG time for the wax prices to drop to a
"reasonable" level ($16-18). Second week released and their already
at $14 a box, or $13 in quantity?

    Why?

I'll tell you. They're ugly, plentiful, and ugly. They're going
to be like the football before long -- people buying the wax
merely for the PV cards ... I saw wax boxes of the football selling
for $7-10 (yes, SEVEN DOLLARS!) this weekend, and CLEARANCE prices
of $7/set (yes, again, seven dollars!) on last year's basketball
    sets.

Those of you interested in these might want to wait for the rack
or cello cards (schoolyard stars, rookie sensation), and pick up
the PV cards seperately (they're plentiful and relatively cheap
    right now).

Looking at the list of players in the SS and RS subsets, I don't
think they're going to reach last year's sets. In fact, they'll
likely drop like the stickers and last year's All-Star sets did/do.

    Just MHO ...

BJ's (Westboro, MA) is selling the 91 Fleer Basketball

91 Score Baseball factory sets for $22.

Actually Juan, I thought the Score set was $21, not $22? ($20.99).

Finally saw the great and wonderful BJ's today.

Boy did you guys have me fooled. I thought it was something
meaningul, not just one wire rack full of wax boxes in the middle
of the candy section ... boo hiss.

Roy, that's what happens when you have high expectations about a
place. We never said it was great, we just said they have this,
and they have that. Actually, they used to have quite a bit more
as far as selections of sports cards go, but lately they don't
seem to have as much, and you can't deny that $21 (not $22 like
I said) is the best price you have seen anywhere for the Score
factory set. They also had, about 3 weeks ago, the Donrus factory
sets with the preview cards in them, for $21, another unbeatable
price. Of course, they are all gone now, which is expected for
    	such a good price.

Not sure of the details, but I went to a dealer on Saturday and he told
me he was expecting shipment of "Rookie Sensation" sets. Not sure if
someone else was putting them together and he was buying them or if
Fleer was putting them together separately. Either way, that beats
    $3/cello in my book...

Look like Fleer is coming out with an update set of 160 cards
    available in wax packs.
Fleer's update series include all new cards of team leaders, rookies,
    traded players, veterans and coaches.
As a special premium, 4000 signed cards of Dominique Wilkins or
Mutumbo, 12 different cards each, will be randomly inserted.
Each pack contains 9 new update cards and 5 of the orginal series.
Each box contains 36 packs and each pack contains 14 cards.

I saw some in particular at the Dugout in Amherst, nh. Packs were
55 cents, with the marked $1.99 cellos going for something
ridiculous like $2.75. I don't think the cellos have anything
    different from the wax packs.

Ayuh Jeff, it's Mutombo, and 'Nique.

And I believe I read that the Cello packs are supposed to contain
randomly inserted "Hot Rookie Sensation" (Johnson, Dikembe, etc.)
    cards -- thus the price.

Of course, this leads one to say, what are they going to have for
insert cards in next year's LO cellos? I dunno. if this year's
baseball is any indication, probably rookie sensation cards of
    Larry, Magic, and Michael.

Its too bad Fleer didn't offer a Fleer Ultra Basketball set similar to
the 92 Ultra baseball that just came out. There is no Stadium
Basketball, so Fleer could have been the first with premium high
quality glossy basketball cards. I think this would have been a big
hit for them. Oh well, maybe next year. I am glad that they didn't
offer Ultra Basketball similar to the 91 Ultra football -- not much
    premium about these cards.

I was mistaken about the HRS cards in cello packs. All you get in
