Apparently this will slow down shipment by 4 months.
Also the NBA has let UD know that they ( the NBA ) will control
distribution of UD Basketball.
Any other information???
The above are rumors.

Roy,
I know your asking Mike Kelly, but let me give it a try. Mike let me
know if I'm wrong..
Lottery System : Many baskets of order forms from dealer across the
country are sitting in Upper Deck's main office. Data Entry personnal
grab one envelope at a time and key's into your computer terminal the
dealers name, address and the amount of case's that dealer has ordered.
The Computer system keep track of the amount of case's Upper Deck has
produced and subtracts that dealers order from the total cases produced.
After a day of doing this Upper Deck's supplier has been depleted. Oooh
but, wait one minute there are still hundred's of envelope's still in
the baskets. What do we do?
Lottery, I think means randomly selected.
These cards should sky-rocket in price!

Please keep discussion of TSC in note 269.
Please keep this note relegated to the discussion of UD Football.
I try my best to move notes to their appropriate places, but a lot
of times discussions get into ratholes of RELATED topics.
I received a mail message from an upset reader who feels that the
UD FB denigrated like all the other notes. Unfortunately, I agree
with him, but I also disagree with him.
This whole notesfile is devoted to sports memorabilia. Granted,
98% of it is sports cards, but each topic does have it's own note,
or a new note for that topic can be started.
However, on the disagree side, if we're talking about something
that's up with UD FB cards, and something similar happened with
another brand, dealer, noter, card-show, whatever, and that
discussion gets picked up, I don't see a problem with it.
All I'm asking is that people please try and reply to the appropriate
note when discussing something. We even have a general piss and
moan note somewhere in the notesfile.

For all of those (myself included) who pre-ordered UD Football thru
SMK in Hudson, here is bad news. I just went over there today, and
he told me that they got their check back. He said that UD sold
out the first day. They selected orders at random and filled them
out, and when they were sold out, whoever was left out didn't get
any. That's what he told me, believe what you will. If you are
suspicious about this, so am I.

I'd write a letter to SCD. They took your money, cashed your checks,

For those unaware, Upper Deck has produced a 50-card football set
for Domino's.
The cards are given away as part of their "quarterback challenge"
promotion.
Order two medium pizzas, and 4 cokes for $9.99, and receive a pack
of the cards.
Cards come 4 per pack (foil pack), and are what you expect from UD
-- nice stock, nice look, hologram, etc.
The promotion began August 3rd (1 week ago), and is on for 3 weeks
only.
I saw the packs at the show in Sturbridge yesterday. Prices ranged
from $1.50 to $5.00/pack. Singles were selling on the average of
$2 to $3 each. Complete sets available for $40-50.

Thier is a Bo Jackson card included in this set, but those

RE: .44,.45
Mike, I think what he's trying to point out is how ridiculous
Beckett's listed price is for this set. If you took that Beckett's
price and went looking for the UD FB set -- you'd be sorely
disappointed -- most espececially in Massachusetees.
It's long been espoused by myself and others in here, that
Beckett's is pretty useless here in Mass., UNTIL the prices have
settled down. So ... since UD is fairly recent (3-4 weeks at
best), the price Beckett's prints is going to be unrealistic
for us. And will be for some time.
I now have two NEW things to add to this discussion:
- Did anyone see the recent ad by New York Card Company in
SCD? They had CASES of the UD/Domino's FB packs available. So
much for UD/Domino's efforts to prevent store managers selling
them out the back door, eh? It's either that or now that the
promotion is over, UD or Domino's is flooding the market.
Personally, I believe it was the managers since NYCC is the only
one I've seen with anything other than packs available.
- I am *completely* unimpressed with this year's set. I
mean the cards are very nice, typical UD quality, but I opened
one box. I'm missing nearly HALF the set (174 to be exact).
I got 7 stereograms -- all the same damned card!
I did do pretty well on the Football Heroes/Joe Montana subset.
Except some jerk scribbled on two of 'em -- talk about quality
control problems ...

Here are some excerpts from an interesting article that appeared
on the periodical "Restaurant News".
Title: Domino's Pizza throws flag, calls back NFL Kick-Off Deal
Sub-title: Two managers fired, others investigated for 'illegal
procedure' during football card promo.
by Theresa Howard
ANN ARBOR, Mich.- Domino's Pizza recently found itself scrambling to
recover from some unexpected problems created by a football card
promotion that prompted the dismisal of two unit managers and the
investigation of four others.
The cards -- each depicting one of 50 National Football
League quarterbacks -- were meant only to be issued to customers as
part of the Domino's Pizza NFL Kick-Off Deal. Patrons received four
cards with the purchase of 2 medium cheese pizzas and 4 soft drinks.
But a demand blitz from card collectors and dealers turned
the limited-edition giveaway into a valuable and hotly traded commodity
Days after kicking off the three-week promotion, Domino's
discovered that the cards were being traded among unit managers,
franchisees, card dealers and customers. One box that contained a
bulk order was reportedly sold for $5,000.
Some of the cards were selling for $6 to $12.50, and the
entire collection is valued at about $125. "Card dealers even
approached headquarters directly ", says Mike Jenkins, a Domino's
spokesman. "A gentleman from Canada saw them at a card show and
wanted to know how to buy them direct."
The cards were in such demand that the corporate headquarters
literally placed the giveaways under lock and key. "After 3 days
we took them out of the corporate units for security reasons",
Jenkins explained. "We also suggested the idea to the franchisees".
Every company unit originally was issued 2 boxes, each filled
with 1,250 packs of the 4 card sets. But security concerns prompted
Domino's to begin distributing only on a daily allotment to the stores,
according to Jenkins.
Two unit managers from the New England area were fired for
selling the cards, and four others are under investigation by the
corporation for allegedly selling the cards to dealers.
The booming popularity stems from the cards' limited
availability and their distinction as the first football items from
Upper Deck, a well known marketer of baseball cards. The promotion
preceded Upper Deck's launch of its own NFL card line, which was one
of the reasons why Domino's teamed up with that particular card
supplier. Most trading cards are issued with the stamped approval
of the appropriate player's union, but the Domino's/Upper Deck cards
lack the insignia. That distinction increased the cards' desirability.
"Some of us had forecast that this would happen for those
reasons", Jenkins said. Those expectations had spurred Domino's to
take some measures to discourage pilferage. For instance, franchisees
were permitted to purchase a greater allotment of cards than needed
for the promotion, and employees could purchase a pack of the cards
at cost.
"The whole idea was that franchisees could purchase them for
employees or friends so that there would be less of a chance of
pilferage," Jenkins pointed out. "But some franchisees were ordering
4 or 5 additional boxes".
"Those instances are isolated, though, and most people are
doing what they're supposed to with the cards. Franchisees realized
that it was a short-term benefit to sell the cards. If the cards had
been unavailable at any point during the promotion, it would had ticked
people off". "The demand for the cards heightened awareness," Jenkins
said. "Sales are up."

Seems like when this novelty stuff first comes out there is alot
of interest and the prices are inflated. After a month or so when
supply is abundant and everyone has already swallowed the hook,
boom... the price fall like a rock. Soon these holograms will be in
the $1 - $1.50 range.
I for one am not jumping at the promo/hologram hype. The biggest
reason why certain cards command a high price is because of the
number of collectors interested in a given number of cards.
For instance, I think the Jordan card will bottom out at $10-$12
and go back up from there. Where as the Greene cards will end up
at $5 or less. Even these promo (Sanders and Montana) are dropping
right now, I've seen them for $25 and they are'nt moving.

GB4 Earnest Byner
GB5 Emmitt Smith
GB9 Marcus Allen
Here's my guess - nine different UD boxes (Montana bottoms) - 9
different GB's... you match each box with a different hologram.
Example (just making this up, not quoting facts...)
Box #1 bottom may have 5 or 6 Humphreys
Box #9 bottom may have 5 or 6 Sanders
etc....

rjk - Look at the bottom of your box. There's a picture that's the
same as one of the Montana series cards. I'm guess that that MAY
be a tip off to which box has which holograms in it. Someone said
(was it in here) that dealers were selling empty boxes. Anyone out

I remember one dealer had the ND Montana in his window and he had
Thurman Thomas first. I'll check the box I have at home (E. Smith)

Well, at the Joe D show in Andover 2 weeks back, the prices on
the UD/Domino's cards had dropped dramatically.
Sets were selling for $14 and $14.95 (the two dealers I spoke
with who had complete sets). Packs could be found for as low
as $1.25, or 5/$5. Very few cards, INCLUDING the McGwire
rookie were demanding much of a premium.
1/2 of the dealers in SCD have these things advertised, and I've
seen them as cheap as $20 in SCD.
UD or Domino's flooded the market. Keep an eye out, and you should
be able to pick these up for a decent price. And it's a nice set.

Yes, so much for them being in the second or update series. The
one dealer who had them said they came in what he termed 'the latest
production run'. It does seem like they have had quite a few runs,
the boxes I saw were all still in the $28-$30 range, but I did not see
anyone moving boxes. It seems most people know by now that the
distribution is not so great for making a set and rather than fork
over another $30, the popular item is the lot of singles the dealers
have left over. Most folks are spending their money trying to fill in
the set and I saw some rather large want lists. Makes one thankful
for the "free" trading opportunity afforded by this notesfile and the
noters who participate.

| One of the reasons I heard that prices were dropping on this was that
UD was releasing a factory set. I've heard AND read both sides of this
story. Does anyone have the definitive answer? Given the expense of
hand-collating a set, the factory sets would have a major impact on the
price of wax boxes.
One dealer said that as soon as you see "dumping" of wax boxes, it
usually means a factory set.
Any word??

FWIW, it was reported in SCD that indeed UD would release a factory
set for football after the football season was over. So if true it
won't be coming out for awhile. I think there are other factors at
work affecting the price of the wax, a pending factory set just
being one of several factors (quantity, poor collation, general
depressed football card market in this area, etc.)

A local dealer has gotten the poop from UD. There will be high
number football wax boxes, a high number set, and a full factory
set. This dealer is preselling the high number sets for $20, the
factory set for $50 (factory will not of course contain holos, heroes,
or sp1). He expects delivery in dec/jan for everything.
The good news: supposedly GB6, 7 & 8 holograms will be in the high
number wax, so all of us should be able to pick those sometime after
the wax comes out.

They are coming out ...
o a 200-card hi series.
o it will be available as a seperate factory unit (like last
year's hockey hi numbers). seen pre-sell ads in scd for
$17.95
o in wax-packs, mixed with series 1. since with their baseball
(15 cards/pack) UD promises an average of 4-5 HI number cards
per pack, I'd assume that a 12-card pack (football, hockey,
basketball) will yield 2-3 hi numbers per pack, or around 100
per box. with a 200-card hi number series, ...
o as part of a 1-700 factory set, available in jan.-feb.
timeframe (according to SCD ads). since UD is always late ...
pre-sell prices have been seen around $45-60. and of course,
factory sets do not include holograms, sp cards, heroes of *
cards, etc.

box which seemed to be running 6-7 high numbers per pack, yet I
also got one pack of just 2 from the same box, so it varies quite

way is to buy the high set, should be able to pick these up for

Despite being a bit luckier than Mike, I agree that UD is freakin'
out of control with their distibution, mixed high/low high wax, insert

This might sound like a pat answer Hal, but it's worth whatever
someone will pay for it.
I've seen it priced (not selling, priced) at shows for between
$700 and $950.
Most of these autographed cards end up dropping below $500, and
anywhere from $150-350 seems to be the "norm".
If your friend BOUGHT it for $165.00 -- he probably got a good deal.
If he sold it for $165.00 -- hard to tell. He probably could've
gotten more from a private sale, than to a dealer, but if it
drops like the others have ... ???
