223.0. "HOF voting needs collector knowledge" by SMURF::BREAU (Bush: KNOW new taxes!) Mon Dec 10 1990 08:34

    Note 181 in ASABET::BASEBALL is a Baseball Hall-of-Fame election
ballot. I figured that guys who collect baseball cards are more
knowledgeable about the career statistics of players who are now
eligible, so this is to let you know about the vote going on there.

I'm kind of suprised at some of the guys on the ballot, let alone some
of the picks. I think we can do a better job, so vote now!

BTW, can anyone please provide the career stats of Dick Allen? He's
eligible this year. I remember seeing them somewhere before and
thinking that he should be in Cooperstown, but as you'll see, not many
people have voted for him. One of you guys must have the last Topps
card for this guy, with all his career stats. If you can, post them
here, or post them in note 182 in BASEBALL, which is a note that
justifies or explains selections in note 181. Thanks.

As I'm at work and don't keep my collection at my desk, I don't have
    Allen's stats.

I do collect his cards though because I really enjoyed watching him
play. He had great power and excellent speed. He also drew great
pictures in the dirt around first base (you had to be there).

He came up with the Phillies and was a loner.
I think that he was rookie of the year.
He got into a fight during batting practice with Frank Thomas (a known
racist). THomas had made a racist remark to Allen (who is black), a
fight ensued in which Allen hit Thomas with a bat on the shoulder.
Thomas was traded shortly thereafter to the Mets. Allen was threatened
with a big fine by the Phillies owner ,Carpenter, if he told the press
the cause of the fight. It wasn't until last year that facts came out.

This is getting of the topic of stats. Do I think Allen should be in
the HOF? hey it would do wonders for my collection. He's probably just
as deserving as some of the others in there and probably not as
deserving as some that don't get in there.

Anyways if I remember I'll try to pull the stats on him tonite.
