	This is a great idea, but these guys have a strict weight limit that
they can haul around and come home with.  Also, would you want to hump around a 
800 count box along with all your other gear.  

  Don't get me wrong, your heart is in the right place, but you'd be better off
sending them a deck of playing cards instead...

    I see your point, but maybe it will give them something to read like
    players stats and whatever.  Maybe a few SCD magazines maybe even
    better, so they can keep up with their investments.  Mike, send a note
    to SCD and ask if you could get a bunch of last weeks SCD's to send to
    the thousands of soldiers who are hobbiests over-seas.  I think its a
    great idea, something inexpensive so if they do have to leave them 
    behind, its no great loss.  Hey, there are so many soldiers over there
    now, they will probably have card shows going on there this spring with
    the new stuff coming out. 

    I thought that the christmas packages had to be mailed before the end
    of Nov to get there in time. I agree with note -1. An 800 count box of
    cards may stop a bullet but a flack jacket is lighter. Go for the

         ProSet bet you to it. The company is airlifting 1.2 million packs
    about 50 tons to the troops in Saudi. Page 2c of the sports section
    in todays' USA. That comes out to roughly 33,333 wax boxes. Will there
    be any left in the good old US ofA.

    Cards are available here in CXO (on the road).  Seen prices from
    .79 to 1.50 per pack, and offered a box for 27.50.  Any other
    info on prices.

    I got a complete set for $26.95  and last night talked to a guy in my 
    local comic book shop who saw them for $10... After talking to several 
    people I'm convinced that the stores will be flooded with them soon 
    especially since the war (at least today) is over and such a big defeat
    seems apparent.  
    
    Price will I THINK come down quite a bit just like the marvel comic book

    I tried to contact you yesterday and today, but node FUTURE:: isn't
    answering... anyway, we haven't seen the Topps Desert Storm cards out
    west yet. I'd like to try and build or buy a set, so let me know how
    many dups you have, maybe we can engineer some sort of swap...

    Since my wife is in the gulf, I figured I'd buy her a set to give her
    when gets back.  I bought a set (with stickers) at a card show
    yesterday for $16.00.  Without stickers, most people wanted about
    $12.00.

	There are 2 varieties, brown and yellow.  The first ones to come
	out had the name in the logo "DESERT STORM" in brown color, and
	as everyone knows, many dealers refused to carry them, the word
	got around, everybody was looking for them, there were not enough
	of them for all the ones who wanted them, the price went up, the
	dealers were selling them for $1.00 a pack, $20 to $25 a box
	because they said they couldn't get as many as they wanted.

	Then the yellow ribbon campaign started, and TOPPS decided to
	change the color from brown to yellow in order to go along with
	the popular idea of the yellow ribbons.  Now, everyone has them,
	you can buy them for $0.50 a pack, $16 a box at a card show I 
	attended recently.

	Many dealers are now making a distinction between the brown and
	the yellow sets, they say the brown set is more scarce because
	they didn't make as many, and consequently, are charging more for
	the brown set. Even the brown single cards are being sold for $0.25
	each at some shows that I attended, as opposed to $0.05 to $0.10
	each for the yellow singles. 

    I was down in Rayhnam Ma. at the flee market and bought a complete
    set of brown with all the stickers for 17$.
    They had alot of them on the table, the one thing that they said
    is that they would only sell the stickers with a purchase of a set
    

    I'M INTERESTED IN TRADING DESERT STORM CARDS........I HAVE SOME EXTRAS
    TO USE IN TRADE...........ANYONE KNOW IF THERE IS A DIFFERANCE IN THE
    YELLOW OR BROWN INSIGNIA IN LEFT HAND CORNER.

    	BJ's in Westboro, Mass. is selling PROSET Desert Storm boxes for
    	$12 each., I was there a couple of days ago, and they had many
    	cases available in the Candy Dept.
    
    	This latest entry of PROSET contains 250 cards, broken down in 
    	categories like Geography (maps of countries), Military assets
    	(pictures of planes, ships, etc.), Government (US, United Nations,
    	Israel, Iraq, Kuwait, etc), Leaders (Bush, Margaret Thatcher, even
    	one for Saddam Huseein smiling).  I like this set a lot, it is the
    	usual PROSET high quality stock and photos, and lots of information
    	on the backs.
    

    
    	Has anyone heard about the specially stamped (desert shield)
    topps cards. They handed them out to troops either on the way over
    or on the way back. I saw some selling for $5 (Ryan, Canseco,Thomas)

    	Just to let you know,  be aware of counterfeit(sp?) Desert Shield
    cards.  Here's how to detect them:
    
    				Fake:				Real:	
    Desert Shield logo	    Bottom of shield comes      Bottom of shield

    			    Logo is larger		logo is small
    
    			    poor detail in stamp	clear detail in
    							stamp                          
    
    The Desert Shield Topps set is the same as the 1991 40th anniversary
    set with the obvious "Desert Shield" logo.
    
    From what I've read, most of the cards were used in place of firewood
    (really!) on cold nights,  cards that were left on the tables of the 
    mess tents ended up in the garbage and other stories.  
    In the story I read, the author suggested that it would be easier to 
    put together a 1954 Topps set than a Desert Shield Topps set.   
    
    Rumor has it, that a complete Desert Shield Topps set could go for as
    low as $3000 and as high as $5000, conservatively speaking, that is.
    
    The next time I see a Desert Shield card for sale at a card show,
    depending on the price, I may just purchase it.

    You ought to come to NC, every other table had more than a few of these
    cards for sale.  Rare is not a adjective I would use to describe these. 
    For the $100 to 300 dollars folks wanted for these you are better off
    with buying older cards.
