| There is an error on Ben MacDonalds card, the All Star Emblem has
not put on the car, instead the Orioles emblem was. The card is
selling for up to $225.
Last week I heard of first run packs selling for $5 - 10 each.
It may soun high, but I saw people buying them up like crazy!

In the latest issue of Price Guide Monthly, they have an article
in there that says that the Ben McDonald error card is selling for
$150.00 and in the price listings it says its value is $100.00.
Which is the correct price of this error card?

99.9 | UD deprecaition! | AKOV12::GASPARONI | | Mon Mar 05 1990 14:21 | 16 |
| I read in a small BB card news letter, that is published, that UD
prices are tumbling down to earth, and fast. The Extended set is down
to $30, and dropping, and sets have been seen to be in the $70 range,
and dropping. Also, the dealers are starting to put the once "SCARCE"
and "RARE" upper deck sets, and extended set out, with few takers, and
the prices are fallllllling to earth. No longer are the cards SCARCE,
or RARE, but plenty full. And the great UD company refuses to devulge
how many sets, and extended sets they made during the 1989 campaign.
The article continues to say that chances are, they made many more sets
than they want the public to believe, and especially what the dealers
wanted you to believe. I guess, the dealers who sold out of 1989 UD
sets are happy. Dealers who sandbagged, hoping to make a REAL killing,
they can now rot with them. As Clint Eastwood once said in his famous
"The Outlaw Joesy Wales" movie, Buzzards have to eat just like worms,
dealers who sandbagged all those hard to find sets, are now going to be
eaten alive!

| I disagree.......
UD sets/subsets are falling in price, but this only tells me to
BUY!!!!!!!!!!!! This is the first UD set and the cards are quality
no matter what happens to the market. To be perfectly honest, the
reason why they were so high is because of the limited distribution
placed by UD, itself. These sets will rebound! This is not a gutsy
prediction, but a fact, and I will stand by it.
If anyone wants to BAIL OUT, I will purchase all 1-800 sets at $35.
Sounds like a joke, but if you are worried.......

| John, I can't beleive it, you agreed with me! (Ha, Ha,) To give you an
example of how the UD is coming down, a recent Natick show had the
full 1-800 for $70. At X-mass time, I saw a set at the Shop in Concord
selling for $125.99. Thats coming down. A recent show in Marlboro
had the extended set for $32. I saw that selling for $65 at the
Brandeis Univ. show in the fall. They may never hit $50, but it will
be a while before you see them for $100. I have learned one thing over
the past year on card collecting, new cards only, if you want to be the
first person on the block with a set, or a box of error cards, you will
pay a premium price, probably because the supply has not been totally
met. But if you wait a few months, the prices do level off, and you
get a much better price, more realistic. Look at the 1989 Topps sets,
you can pick them up for $16.99 at Osco Drug. In the fall, they were
selling them for $21. The supply catches up to the Demand in this
business eventually, the price always follows. John, your comment
on the UD not getting disbursed to retail outlets is "right on".
Dealers created their own scarcity, and demand was high, because of
hoarding by everyone able to buy in bulk. I think there is still
room for a drop before UD is back on track. No question, its the
quality set!

99.14 | '89 UD sets will depreciate | PCOJCT::THOMAS | | Tue Mar 06 1990 09:37 | 17 |
|
Last year Woolworths (in N.Y.) had UD foil packs. They sold initially
for $1.00, then $1.10. Now they have hundreds of 1989 UD 1-800 sets.
They showed up in locked display cases in late January. They are priced
at $98.99 and they are not moving. This particular Woolworths may have
picked these sets up separate from national purchasing agreements and
therefore may need to get that price but there is literally no
interest. They will be discounted along with the 19.00 1989 Fleer
sets.
I haven't seen Fleer cards at Woolworths this year. I think Woolworths
is still mad about the Billy Ripkin recall that they complied with.
"Send us back the cases or we will not send you any cards next year."
No other outlet complied and still gets cards.

99.18 | UD ext'd set, $22 bucks and falling! | AKOV12::GASPARONI | | Fri Mar 09 1990 12:26 | 17 |
| I think UD likes to give everyone the impression that there stock is
very limited, and in demand. They move it all around the country,
because they have not yet found a regular retailer to market the cards,
due to their first year of operation. But big dealers, HOme shopping
Network got millions, why? Because thousands of people watch TV and
its free advertising, good promotion, especially when a ball player
comes on the show a pushes his autogragh stuff. Then they throw the UD
cards in between, and you get a ballplayer who knows didely about cards
telling everyone what a great card it is, and how the prices are
shooting up and its a great investment. So the general public, who
needs a fix to buy something around Christmas time says, " Does little
Johnny want some baseball cards"? Yes mamma, buy me some NOW. CVN and
the other Cable shopping network got millions. Dealers and shmucks
like us got none, or very few. Check out a show this weekend, I saw UD
at the Andover show, the extended set, for $22. Thats below the dealer
cost, and there taking a beating folks. Sure, it will go back up, but
things are tight out there, and there not moving UD 1989 sets. YA,YA!!

| What makes you think Dealers paid in excess of $22 for the update set?
I have it on good authority that they paid aprox. $6 each and are
laughing all the way to the Bank at all the smuks that are paying their
outrageous asking prices. $22 is still way to hi.
Dick
|
99.21 | | AKOV12::GASPARONI | | Mon Mar 12 1990 12:48 | 11 |
| I guess I heard it at the Concord Card Shop. Fred said $22 is below
cost. How many STARS in that little EX. set anyway? I saw a UD set at
the Newton show yesterday for $77, (1-800) and they weren't moving. I
agree, that set is way to HIGH!! I remember when it was going for $60.
And dealers were saying it would hit $100. But when?? UD is DEAD
right now, and all baseball cards are dying a sloooooow death,
especially if baseball doesn't get untracked. All those rookie cards,
won't be worth the cardboard there printed on. Who are these guys??
They never played in the "SHOW". $6 bucks for the EXT. set seems a
little low to me. The box must cost that, never mind the 100 cards in
the box.

| Will,
Save your money and spend it on older cards in nice condition. They're
more challenging to find, nicer to look at, and generaly worth more. If
it's the thrill of opening wax packs you want, go to Costco and you can
pick up boxes of Topps, Donruss, and Fleer for $11.99. Cheap fun.
If it's investing you're after, pick up late '70's early '80's cards of
potential H.O.F.'ers and wait. Oh yeah, if you do this, be a MINT
FREAK! there's plenty of these cards around, so to make money you want
*perfect* one's.
Personally, I collect Giants team sets. I don't invest (much), and the
Giants cards mean alot to me.
The above is obviously MY opinion, and shouldn't be taken as the
*right* way to do anything. I'll go beyond Roy and say that I'm an
anti-anything_new collector. I think it's all garbage! 8^)
