John,
Where can I find an Osco Drug? I've looked around the MetroWest
area (via the phonebook) and can't find one anywhere!! 8^( I'd like
to pick up a few sets for my nephews.
Thanks,
Dave

97.4 | 90 Scores are out | USWAV1::VINTON | | Fri Dec 15 1989 14:33 | 7 |
| 1990 Scores are out. I just bought a box at Front Row Sports in
Derry, N.H. He had a couple of cases but they were going fast. Quality
of the cards is far below previous years, glossy finish is no longer
there. The Bo football card is a joke. Several of the pictures appear
to be reprints of photos I've seen before.
Claims he will have Donruss next week.

97.5 | High Ratings on 1990 set by Tuff Stuff. | AKOV12::GASPARONI | | Tue Feb 13 1990 16:03 | 11 |
| I read in Tuff Stuff Magazine that the Score BB cards for 1990 are top
rated, for rookies, and for originallity, "Dream Team". The pictures
are real sharp, good stats, and overall got the best rating next to
UD. Only draw back they mentioned was that the names of the
ballplayers on the front side were hard to read. I still think that
this company puts out a better product than Fleer, or Don Russ, and
maybe even Topps. I think this company is a sleeper for investors,
someday, collectors are going to wake up and see the quality in this
company. They haven't really jumped into this error hype, or at least
they don't advertise it like Fleer and DR. so I really respect them and
hope they stay around awhile.
|
97.7 | Don't wait to long. | AKOV12::GASPARONI | | Thu Feb 15 1990 13:52 | 11 |
| I just found out a very discouraging event. I went out to check out
the Osco Drug sets, and someone went in and bought up all the sets,
Topps that is. Score was still left at the Rt62 store in Concord,
but one of the local dealers bought them all out. Thats what the store
manager told me. So if you want one, you have to go to the dealers
store and pay the $25 bucks. This is what really kills the hobby for
the poor collector, and for the children who have been saving up their
paper route money for the past 3 weeks, to suddenly walk into the drug
store, and find his DREAM SET scooped up by the local card dealer. Is
this great for the hobby. AT least he left the BEST SET at the drug
store, "SCORE". Hope the dealer has to eat them!!

I was at the Ossco Drug store in Waltham and there were *plenty*

Rotmans in Worcester and pay 19.00.

>> of '89 Topps sets left for 14.99. And if you can't do that, go to
>> Rotmans in Worcester and pay 19.00.
Where was that price listed??? I don't have the most recent Sports
Collectors Digest, but the latest one I have (cover date today,
16-FEB) has them listed as:
1989 Topps set collated in special "decorative" box $24.99
1989 Topps set collated by Topps (plain box) $22.99
However, if you buy a 16-set case, the price averages out to about
$20 for the plain wrapper sets.
The "decorative" boxes are the ones that Osco and Walgreen's sell.
These are the same sets that dealers piss and moan about 'cuz they
can't get them through Topps. These are sold exclusively to the
major retail stores (K-mart, Osco, Walgreen's, etc). Probably the
main reason why dealers hoard them all from retail stores....

I went to Rotman's about 2 months ago and bought 4 or 5 various
sets. I don;t remember the particulars but I do remember that the
price's that hudmar and the coin/card shop in stow were $5.00 over
the SCD price and Rotmans was $2.00-$3.00 leass then SCD. I remember
saying to myself, why would *anybody* but a set form a dealer when
they can get these (Rotmans) prices. AS far as the Ossco box being
different than the factory box, that don't bother me in the least.
Same cards.

| Score BB cards got good grades from the recent SCD Magazine. They came
in second, and UD came in first. DR third, and Topps, and Fleer
rounding out the entries. I still think, that Score gives you a good
quality product, two nice pics. The SCD article did comment on the
fact that Score gave you a good qualtiy picture and good stats. UD
got very good marks, and appears to be the premium card. I wonder why
score doesn't seem to be making it from an investors point of view? To
many cards out there??

| >> Score's have been out since last Christmas
>> and they can still be found. All of sudden almost a half year later
>> people think they're scarce. Unreal !
Within the next few weeks, '90 Score Baseball will be no longer available.
Local stores may still have some on the shelves, but ask them if they've
received any boxes from the candy distributors over the past few weeks.
Very few, if any. Why??? Very simple; Score is no longer printing '90
Baseball cards and will not print anymore. They're in process of
changing the plates to print '90 Score Football cards (w/ another
version of the Bo/Nike/FB/BB card :-) ) The same thing happened with
Fleer Basketball and Topps Hockey cards. The companies stopped printing
them around Christmas. In January you could still find them on the
shelves but the stores could no longer order them. By the end of February
you could no longer find them ...
It doesn't matter what you want to call it (limited production, scarce),
you're just not going to find them anymore...

| There is a large supply of Score Mylar (wax) around. Score stopped
production of its 1988 cards two years ago. I've still got unopened
packs. (not for sale never will be) and I can still got to any number
of outlets and buy @.75-1.50 1988 score packs.
I will grant you that there is interest in the 1990 Score cards. One
reason is Score has printed cards for "Rookies" that may still be a
couple years from playing regular in the Majors. Scores Major league
version of minor league stars. One ad I saw touted 1990 Score as "The
sleeper set of the Decade!!""
Its Hype (IMO) I liked the 88 Score, There were hundreds of boxes in
the stores. Then they were gone. I thought "Damn I should have bought a
couple of more boxes". Then they were back Hundreds of boxes plus
thousands of Rak pax. I bought more, now I have too many. My grand kids
will open them 20 years from now. And they will still be available
because, since 1980, dealers and investors are putting Millions of
cards into storage waiting for the price to go up. Sorry, The new cards
(anything after 1980) will not keep up with inflation. Except the Bo,
unless his knee blows up one day on the 20 yard line or the left field
foul line. Bo's will be special, Score cards won't, except for the
cards that mean something to the collector. Sorry investors.

| A dealer here in Atlanta, who I know rather well and respect, is
currently selling factory sealed Score complete sets for $39.95.
He told me to hold off and wait. He has not received his shipment
from score yet and I should be able to pick up a Score set for about
$25-$27. These will be hand collated and not sealed, naturally. He
also has been telling me for the last 3 weeks that Score was no
longer making cards. At a store where I occasionally buy wax packs,
I was told by one of the clerks that adults were comming in and
buying boxes of score saying that they are going to be scarce.
I also think that this is more games being played by the card companies
to sell their product in an ever growing very competative market.
I do feel that the 1990 Score set will be an excellent set to have
just for the rookies. As an investment???

Score had to halt production of Mylar packs do to a severe shortage of
the MVP trivia inserts. Relyable sources inside the company said that
all the inserts disapeared the day the factory was visited by a group

inserts at prices here-to-fore unseen.
Score plans to dump millions of cards into the market-place at
give-away prices because of the problem.

I went out and asked a card shop owner what was going on with the '90
score. This guy deals pretty straight but he is in this business
to make money.
He said that the report is that the printers (Optigraphics of Grand
Prarie Texas) did not print as many cards as Major League Marketing
(Score) ordered.
Major League Marketing feels that there is enough existing supply to
meet demand. I assume that to be demand at .50 per pack.
Regardless, either Amurol products (the distributor) or the wholesalers
(the middlemen between the distributor and the stores) have jacked up
the prices. Therefore, dealers and stores have raised the prices to
$1.00 a pack.
Economics 101 supply and demand. Rumors of a short printing increase
demand. price goes up.
I personally won't pay 1.00 a pack for any current year cards. (There
are no 1990 UD cards in my collection). I will however probably buy
more score if I get them at .50 from a candy store owner who hasen't
raised his prices, than I would have had there been no short print
rumor.
I still think that its a bunch of horse bleep and we are going to find
that availability of these cards will be there and we should refuse to
pay the jacked up prices.

was becuase score has always been in deep supply as they were
never a 'hot' set....they *ARE NOT* in short supply....there are
plenty of them out their but the you know whats are just jacking
up the prices and jackin us off.....if you people out there go
out and scoop them up its only going to drive up the prices even
further......*DON'T* be fooled...*DON"T* pay *THEIR* prices...
don't panic......reality will eventually set back in and the
prices will come back down.....

The card you're referring to commerates the National Convention. MY
understanding is there are 600 cards total. 100 of them were given to

logo from the convention.

| Another way of looking at it is that unopened boxes traditionally
outperform sets, even though they don't contain certain cards. It's the
gambling mentality, I guess. You open up a box of '86 Donruss, there's
no guarantee you'll get even one Canseco, but you could get 3 or 4.
Thus the box sells for more than the set, in which you're guaranteed
one card of everybody. Strange, huh?
