87.0. "1989 Topps Double-Headers (Baseball)" by NRADM::MCNEALY () Fri Sep 29 1989 17:12

I was visiting a card shop in West Concord at lunchtime today
and saw something new (for me anyway). These are small cards, printed
on both sides and enclosed in a hard plastic stand. One side of
the card is the players 1989 Topps card while the other side is
that players Topps rookie card. The cards are a little smaller
than a typical "mini" size (like the Leaders set). Otherwise
they look just like the regular issue cards. I didn't look closely
enough to notice if the "rookie" cards were labled as reprints.

They are packaged one to a pack and this guy was selling them
for 50 cents each. The outside of the package shows a checklist of
24 cards, 12 A.L. and 12 N.L. I have no idea if this is all there
will be or if they will come out with more players in another series.

Has anyone else seen these ? What do you think ? Would these
be considered "reprints" on not ?

By the way, my curiosity got the best of me and I bought a few.
I got Mattingly, Strawberry, WIll Clark and Andre Dawson.

This guy was also selling a set of the same cards, removed from
the plastic holders for $25.00 for the 24 cards !

They are called Double Headers. There are 24 cards to the set.
I can't beleive the set was being sold for $25.00 I need 12
more cards to complete my set. I think they are a nice card.

50 cents each is a good deal. The ones we have cost $1.25, from
a store near Sacramento. My cost would have to be the high side.

The cards are repros though they are not labeled as such. I like
em too, I wish I had the "Thrill" card!8^( I have Canseco and a
few others. The card shops have them but they jack the price. I
have not seen them in the "retail" type stores.
I think $25 for the set is a complete rip off for a set of these!
It just goes to show how the manufacturers will go to any length
to flaunt the ROOKIE card phenom and take your money.

    assistance greatly needed.

    Thanks,
    Ken
