58.0. "Lindy Lindstrom" by IAMOK::NORRIS (What is it, Miss Pfeffernuss?) Thu Jan 19 1989 13:19

From a recent Boston Herald, by Ralph and Terry Kovel.

The World's rarest baseball card has just been discovered.

Back in 1932, the United States Caramel Company issued a set of
32 cards picturing famous athletes. They are 2 by 3 cards had
a black and white picture against a red background with white
border and the athlete's name written in white above the picture.

One card was placed in each package of caramel candy. On the back
of each card was a premium offer: "Return a complete set of 32
and receive a league baseball, value $1." For a long time, card
No. 16, picturing Lindy Lindstrom, was a "missing antique." But
recently the company's file card was found. The back is stamped
"canceled" and there are two small punch holes at the bottom.
It is believed to be the only Lindstrom card actually printed,
on the assumption that the company did not want to furnish the
	offered premiums.

But it is possible that there are more. If you have a card like
this, make a photocopy of it and write to us in care of this
newspaper. The Lindstrom card is in the possession of Lelands,
an auction house in Allentown Pa., that specializes in sports
memorabilia. Last year they sold another rare card, one of the
50 [5?] known Honus Wagner cards, for $110,000. The Lindstrom
card is probably worth considerably more.

	Gee, I have 3 of those :-)

Rumors in the hobby indicate that the card sold for 1 million and
that the purchaser received 25,000.00 to leave it on display. The
owner is lining up other card shows and the hall of fame. The
promoters will charge admission when the card is on display.
I hope 50 no 500 counterfeit cards show up. What are these folks
    smoking?
