47.0. "1988 Topps BIG (Baseball)" by REMACP::MARSHALL () Sun Jul 03 1988 20:39

    To all,
    	If you don't already know, Topps came out with a BIG series
    that looks like the Topps 1956 card. They will be distributed in
    3 series of 88 cards in each series. BUT...they will only be available
    in cello wraps, 7 cards per pack, and will not be sold in complete
    sets to anyone. Dealers can't get them from Topps at the moment,
    and one dealer told me that Topps is only selling to Candy stres
    and convenience stores, and after initial delivery of a few boxes,
    will only get to order one lot for each series. Maybe this is similar
    to the way cards were available in 1956. Meanwhile, the cards are
    nice glossy finish, with 87 stats and life stats on the bottom of
    the flip side and contains 3 small color cartoons. The front have
    a face picture with an action shot of the player in the background.
    	Sooo, I have a friend that owns a store that will be getting
    as many boxes as he can. I can most likely get these BIG boxes at
    a good price. If anyone might be interested in buying these boxes,
    	send me mail, and I'll let you know how many I can get and what
    the price will be.

    			Scott

    P.S. I hope that someone (Becketts) comes out with a price on these
    new cards soon.

    RJ would you mind telling what the box cost you? I may be interested
    depending on price.

    I HATE those cards, a poor attempt at the old cards. Thin stock
    and glossy (yeech!). The only thing going for them is that they
    will be issued in series and are the SAME size as the '52 - '56s.
47.456/88 sizesREMACP::RICHARDSONThu Jul 14 1988 13:398
    The 56' series cards are 2-5/8" X 3-3/4". Same as the 88 BIG series.
    I like the way TOPPS is issuing them in three series, reminiscent of the
    early days. The rear is very similiar, but the front could have
    been similiar too. Personally I dont care for the name on the splash
    of paint on the front; maybe a color bar or box, but not the splash.

    I hope these cards do catch on, even if I hate them, maybe someone
    will make a plastic case for them. Last time I tried to get a '54
    in to one of these cases I had to bend it in half to get it to fit.

47.6And don't forget the insert!LDYBUG::HUNTModern Day WarriorThu Jul 14 1988 15:1013
    re: .3
       While I can't say I HATE them, they are on very thin stock and
    VERY glossy. The backs are nice and my kids love the cartoons!
    I also hope they are successful so that supplies to fit the earlier
    cards become easier to find.

    BUT,
        the really good news is the insert! You (yes, you) can now
    order a Topps baseball card collector Sweatshirt available in four
    great designs! Only $19.95 plus $1.50 postage and handling.

    Remember how popular the *very* glossy All-Star cards in Topps Rack
    Packs have been?? Then again, Tiffany sets arent that cheap (or too
    popular). I like the sets, but think a duller finish would have
    been great.

    When I picked up my 52' Warren Spahn (Boston Braves) last night,
    I noticed BIG series at the local shop selling for .75, the dealer
    said they've been selling quick at that price (for 7 cards ?!?!?)
    He expects them to sell for a buck in a week or two (!) Canseco
    seemed to be the favorite all around. I wonder what the second set
    will be like for distribution. Topps didnt give him(dealer) the
    option to buy any, he bought them from some guy in New York for
    $22 a box of 36 packs! Gee, maybe I should sell him my 30 boxes
    for $18 each..

    Just Kidding...I only have 25    ;^)

    Hmmm... They are available in Milford at Purchase Street Market
    for .40/pack...

		My daughter picked up the following at a flea market
		and was curious about their current value.

			-  TOPPS BIG Series
				Eric Davis (#20)
				Ellis Burks (#80)
				Jose Canseco (#13)

			- The K-Mart 20th Anniversary TOPPS Limited Edition
			   A.L. and N.L. MVP's ('62-'82, I think).

		Any help??   Thanks.

47.12Weekend ShowREMACP::RICHARDSONMon Jul 18 1988 09:339
    There was a show at the Sheraton Tara/Framingham Sunday. The only
    prices I noticed for singles was .35 each, but Canseco seems to
    be the most popular so far. 2nd Series was there too, around $25
    a box, one guy was selling 2nd Series errors for $65 a box/$2 per
    pack (!!!!) They are 1st Series in 2nd Series wrappers. Some bull
    about only three cases getting out of Topps (yeah,..sure...). With
    this *BIG* trauma going on, the only person selling 8/count card
    pages was asking 4/$1, while the 9/count could be found 8/$1 !!!
    This dude was suffering from cranial arrest !!!!!
47.13Available at the Newton showGUTZ::COOPERMANMon Jul 18 1988 12:5810
    I went to the Newton show yesterday. One dealer was selling boxes
    of these cards for $18 (50c per pack). The entire first series
    was available for $15.95, if my memory is correct. The bottom has
    apparently dropped out of the Topps regular market, as boxes were
    available for as low as $9.95. The first set apparently has more
    stars than the second (series, that is).

    I was pleased to see quite a few older cards, including both 54
    Topps Williams, two dealers with 54 Bowman, and two with the Koufax
    rookie card.

    Hey guys...BIG is going BIG right now. At the TARA there was even
    dealers selling 2nd series for $30 to $40 per box!!! I can still
    get them, but prices are going up. The problem is to find any place
    that will sell quantity of these cards. Send me mail if you're
    interested and I'll let you know what I have the 2nd series for.

47.15Price list anyone?GUTZ::COOPERMANThu Sep 08 1988 10:487
    Does anybody have a price list for individual cards from 1st and
    2nd series? I'm going to trade some cards but don't have any values
    in my Baseball Card Magazine.

    Thanks.

    Does anybody have an idea why the BIG series is not being listed
    in the monthly Beckett? It's not like we're talking about a regional
    set or a very limited edition set. Beckett even covers traded sets.
    Is the 3rd series out yet?

    I saw the 3rd series at a shop in Milford on Wednesday. Beckett
    will start carrying the prices if Topps does it again next year.
    I believe they are waiting to see if it's a "real" set or a
    speciality set such as the KayBee Toy cards. This is opionion,
    not fact.

47.18BIG is listedREMACP::MARSHALLFri Sep 30 1988 14:067
    The BIG 3rd series is out and selling faster than either of the first
    two series. I heard that Beckett's hasn't decided yet on listing
    the prices of the BIG series, BUT the CCP monthly listing had them
    listed in the latest release, but it didn't include the 3rd series,
    Only series 1 and 2.

    Watch what happens, the first series will be the "tough" series
    and the 3rd series will be the cheap one. History doesn't always
    repeat itself.

47.21REMACP::RICHARDSONTue Oct 04 1988 17:408
    It SHOULD be included regardles of times issued. Forget the
    KAYBEE/TOPPS or WOOLWORTH/TOPPS or KAYMART/TOPPS, this is a
    TOPPS/TOPPS set. Just like Topps Deckle or Supers or stamps.
    They are 'oddball issues' during a time when we have regular
    issues (Topps).
