Footprints in the sand
We made footprints in the sand,
We walked there once, hand-in-hand,
Loving under light of sun and moon.
Many tides have passed,
Leaving nothing else at last,
But those footprints still remained among the dunes.
Sometimes the sand was hot.
Sometimes it hurt a lot.
Sometimes the waves were hard and awful cold.
But we walked on and on,
Until the starlight was all gone,
Until the beach and we had both grown old.
I guess the tide destroyed
What I hoped it would avoid.
I really should have tried to understand
That tides ebb and flow each day,
And they wash memories away,
But Ill always see those footprints in the sand.
