979.0. "IP switching V3.2 firmware shipping?" by CSC32::J_SOBECKI (John Sobecki, DTN 592-4101, CXO3-2/D2) Mon May 05 1997 18:41

    Hello,

Any status regarding the V3.2 firmware being released? I have
a customer who says one of the Network World type rags said V3.2
firmware with IP switching is shipping to customers or some such
    wording.

I checked the Web page, only V3.1 firmware...

    Thanks,
    John Sobecki

...if you look two notes back at 977.0, the same question was
    asked.

Nothing has changed. Marketing put erroneous information out,
which has been propagated. BL3.2 has not been released despite what it
says in the paper. Believe it or not, sometimes the media prints
    things which are incorrect.

P.S. I am going to move or delete this note later today. It does not
    deserve yet another note.

    Sorry,

I searched using dir/title=3.2 and also searched via eirs using
    gigaswitch and 3.2.

How about a Press Release from NPB to clear up the media confusion?

Or, update the NPB Web page to remove the public viewable text that
says we have IP packets switching "today".

    Check out the Press Release:

"The Version 3.2 upgrade kit will be available on the Web in March.
GIGASwitch/FDDI systems that ship in March will include the upgraded
    firmware"

I am well aware of the fact that the web pages are incorrect. This
fact has been pointed out many times with no results. My analysis is
that Marketing (who has little if any presence in this notes
conference) believes it to be a waste of time to admit the error
considering the expectations of a ship in the near future.

...as usual, I suggest you direct your suggestions to the product
manager, who is now Alice Hassey.

...just to further make your day, our publications also claim the
fast ethernet cards are available, and they aren't even close to
    shipping.

    Hello,

I sent mail to the product manager regarding this subject.

Who is the big boss in NPB Marketing? I'll send them mail as well.

I'm getting tired of telling customers we have lies posted on the NPB
web page (but trying to act professional at the same time).

    Good Day,

I am pleased to announce the appointment, effective immediately, of

		   Network Product Business Unit (NPB).

Giulio will be responsible for defining, developing, and implementing the
go-to-market strategy for the Network Product Business in the Americas. He
will also support the development of Field Marketing programs designed to
build awareness and generate demand across all channels. Giulio and his
team will focus special attention on complementary programs and customer
satisfaction with our internal Digital partner groups, especially NSIS and

commercial distribution partners and resellers; improving bandwidth and
efficiency of Channel infrastructure; and continuing the implemention of an
effective and streamlined approach to all sales and sales operations
functions.

During the past several months, Giulio has served as the acting Vice
President of Sales and Marketing for the Americas, in addition to his role

*** THIS MESSAGE IS FROM BOB RENNICK ***

I have accepted, with regret, the resignation of Avi Fogel, vice president
of Global Marketing for the Network Product Business. Avi has decided to
leave Digital to pursue a start-up opportunity in the networking industry.
He joined Digital in October of 1995 and has been a valued contributor to
the NPB during his short tenure. We wish him the best.

I am pleased to announce that, effective December 23rd, John Ardini has
accepted the assignment as acting vice president of Global Marketing for
the NPB, reporting to me. John will work with the senior marketing staff
and me to meet the exciting challenges in the near term. Our immediate
tasks are to launch several new major products and to continue the
transformation of the NPB to our dual mission of being a vigorous
competitor in the fastest growing segments of the network infrastructure
industry and being a key team member in Digital's 1-3-9 strategy. We
will begin an internal and external search for the new Marketing VP at the
start of the calendar year.

John joined NPB last May and has been in Digital since 1977. He brings a
broad base of experience to the job including; management assignments in
Digital Manufacturing and Engineering, as well as marketing management
roles involving strategic alliances, marketing communication, systems
integration and manufacturing industries. John has a B.S. in Industrial
Engineering from Northeastern University and a M.S. in Management Science
from Lowell Technological Institute.

Please join me in giving John your full support in his new assignment.

Subject: NPBU Chief Information Officer Announcement

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Tom Weyant to chief

    accurate ...

I expect V3.2 to include FGL and AGL-2+ updates in addition to the
SCP, and it should be out in another week or two.
