953.1 | does N&G have a pod for this. | KERNEL::FREKES | Like a thief in the night | Fri Mar 21 1997 12:16 | 8 |
| This depends if the sniffer has the correct pod, that can sit between
the two stations, and just listen to the data as it passes.
With out actually becomming an active station.
I am not sure if the GIGaswitch supports port mirroring. Perhaps there is
someone else who could answer on that one.

953.2 | Nope | NPSS::SOLOWAY | Stu Soloway 226-7651 | Fri Mar 21 1997 16:50 | 7 |
| It doesn't support port mirroring, if I correctly understand what you
mean. You can't configure port 1 so that it will spit out the same
stuff that comes out port 2.
Sorry

| ...and putting an analyzer between two devices is not something
which requires "GIGAswitch/FDDI System support". It is external to the
GIGAswitch/FDDI system operation.
...any analyzer which does not have an active MAC (I.E. sometimes
referred to as "passive monitoring") should be able to be placed on a
full duplex connection without breaking it. Sometimes, this is
achieved with a "splitter" cable.

I was working with the local Network General rep concerning this
issue. Evidently this comes up a lot in their sales into Gigaswitch
customers.
We placed the Sniffer in a full duplex connection with a beam
splitter cable, analyzer in passive mode. What you see on the trace is
only one of the two conversations on the link. It makes sense since
the analyzer only has one "RX" port. They may be working on this but
don't quote me on it!
