742.0. "Missle Command (Gameboy)" by SPIKED::SWEENEY (Tom Sweeney in OGO) Mon Apr 13 1992 08:44

This game was one of my favorites in the arcades, and also when it hit the
Atari 2600 a number of years ago. So when it came to the Gameboy, I naturally
had to get it.

If you've seen Missle Command before, you'll recognize this version immediately.
You're in charge of two bunkers protecting a half dozen buildings. From above,
you're being attacked by missles, planes, satelites and smart bombs. Keep them
from blowing up all of your buildings and you continue, if not you start over.

The twist to this latest version is you move from city to city. You start in
Cairo, go to New York, then London, then Sydney, then Paris, then Moscow....
But in reality, it's all the same. Your buildings and bunkers are the same,
just the pretty background pictures change. Oh, and the further you get the
faster and more numerous the missles.

If you've liked this game in the past, you'll like the Gameboy translation.
Though I must admit I like playing this game better with a joystick. If you
haven't played in the past, you might try renting. People tend to either
like this one a lot (despite simple game play and graphics), or just don't
see the allure.

Still trying to save the Ruskies!

    Re. .0

Just got this one last night as a late birthday present. Wow!!!

This game is a reason I'll never get rid of my Atari 2600; I still play
it from time to time when I find one at an arcade. But the GameBoy
version captures a lot of the flavor of the original.

I couldn't tell, but it seems you can loose a lot more missiles to
create a "wall" when the faster waves begin. And things become quite
frantic when you have the smart bombs coming in.

The "background" cities are a nice touch; it sure is a statement of the
times that one of the cities you're defending IS Moscow!!!!

For us nostalgic-type videogamers, Missile Command is perfect!

P.S. This week it's on sale for $25 at Kay-Bee Toys.
