697.0. "Gameboy purchase decision - quick reply if you can..." by BUYDEC::KENNEDY (Matt Kennedy - DTN:264-3423) Thu Dec 05 1991 13:56

Can you help with purchase decision?? Any input greatly appreciated!!

My wife and are considering buying my 8yr old son a gameboy for xmas. He has had
and enjoyed the NES for 2 years now.

What I really want is a portable video game $75-$100.

My questions are?

1. Is this the right unit or is there another unit (Atari?) I should select?
Seems to me there are other units out there? If Gameboy is it why?

2. Is this unit about to be obsoleted as with NES has been with super NES?

3. I seem to remember seeing this at Toys R US for $89. Is there a
significantly better price around?

What are the recommendations these days???

Sorry for all the questions just want to make the right choice. Now that I
have convinced my other half (not a big video game fan!) want to make the
purchase fairly quickly but without making a mistake.

Matt Kennedy

The Game Boy is being played out now because of its poor graphics,
(wich are black and white)sound and gameplay however gameboy has the
widest portable selection of games. Most games are about $25.

For the price you want to spend you can get the Atari Lynx color portable.
With about 30 games by christmas,it also has better sound, graphics
and gameplay than Game Boy. Most games are at the $30 range.

The Game Gear is the portable I chose because Sega has the most 3rd
party liceses of the color portables and I think they will eventually
have a wider selection of games than Lynx and Turbo Express. Game gear
has an optional T.V. tuner that turns your Game Gear to a portable T.V.
This system costs $150 but I have seen it for $100. Games run about $30.

The Turbo Express Is the best portable on the market. It also has
the Optional T.V tuner and the most games of the color portables.
It playes all the games on the Turbo Grafix 16. Games are any where
from $20-$60. Unfortunately this portable is $300.

For the price and all overall reasons I would recomend Lynx.
If you could find A Game Gear for $100 I would recomend that.

      Hope this helps,
                   Rene
