671.1 | Try the 16 bit notesfile: KBOV06::MEGA | YRDARM::finnegan | Do you want is done right or right now? | Wed Oct 02 1991 10:18 | 12 |
| The amount of traffic may tell you something...
Turbo Grafix 16 went head to head with Sega Genesis and the Genesis system seems
to have won out.
I looked at all three and I felt that Turbo Grafix had better peripherals (sp?)
- the hand held can play the same carts as the main system and it has a CD
but not as many games. Also, the game reviews were not as glowing as Genesis.
Note 38 in the Mega confernce might help.

671.2 | My reasons to buy | PRIMES::FINKELSTEIN | Dept. of Redundancy Dept. | Wed Oct 02 1991 12:37 | 10 |
| There is no simple answer. They all have nice performance and hardware.
The question that matters to me is, who has the games
that interest me and my kids most? From the games point of view, I
believe that Nintendo wins hands down for shear quanitity and
selection. This is not to detract from Sega or Turbografix which are
both fine systems and have some fun games.
Don't buy a system because of 1 or 2 flashy games. Buy it for
the overall selection of games that you want to play.

671.3 | i got tgx-16 | STAR::MARISON | Scott Marison | Thu Oct 03 1991 16:40 | 28 |
| I got tgx-16...
Why? Well... one major reason was because it had Slaughter House, a
game that I loved to play in the arcade near U. Lowell (when i was a
student, what, 1 year ago?) Another big factor was that the system
only cost $99, and the games seemed just as good as any games available
on other systems except some seemed more interesting... For example,
I can't think of the title, but it's a war stategy game... Also the CD
player interests me, although it's a tad expensive... They also had
(at Toys R Us) some games for only $20.... which I got a few of. They
are all good graphics, and good game play too (although, I've only had
this for 1 night...)
The golf game is really good, the baseball game is fun, the pinball game
is interesting, and Slaughter House is perfect! (these are the games I
got...) The game that came with it is OK, I haven't played it much...
but i am impressed by the graphics... I'd say it's equal to Sega's 16 bit
machine (ya ya, tgx-16 really is only an 8 bit CPU... but with a 16 bit
graphics chip, i don't know if the difference will be very big...)
Well, thanks for the pointers and advice...
I wish there were more stategy games out... Kinda like the kind of
games Intellevision use to sell... Mind games more then just hand-eye
games... (but there's nothing wrong with hand-eye games... I just think
they could have more variety... too many "power up" type games exist)

671.5 | Where is the Turbo Graphix note??? | LUDWIG::PHILLIPS | Music of the spheres. | Tue Oct 08 1991 10:07 | 10 |
| Could someone point me to a Turbo Graphix note?
We just got one a few days ago, and last night my wife checked for
software at Toys-R-Us. What she found amazed me: we got GALAGA '90
and Tengen's KLAX - for a paltry $20 each! (KLAX alone will keep me
happy for a looooong time!)
I'd like some more info on this wild system. Help!

I think there is a discription about it in previous note.
SNES has PCM(sampling sound chip)
GENESIS has 1 PCM
TGX ha no PCM (CD has PCM)
PCM chip can speak clear voice
Sound quality I guess is SNES > GENESIS > TGX.

671.10 | Having owned all three . . . | HPSRAD::JWILLIAMS | John Williams Cirrus 297-6141 | Wed Nov 06 1991 14:26 | 26 |
| I sold off the TG-16. Why? I thought the games I bought were crude and I saw
little or no improvement in the offering over time. Maybe they're devoting
alot of attention on CD games, but CD games don't really interest me yet.
The CD games seem to be more expansive, but basically the same old formula.
I sold it off.
I got the SNES after I sold the TG-16, and I own a couple games for it. I like
some of the games ( I was disappointed with actraiser ), but the SNES
certainly is not all it was cracked up to be. I am sure that some really
interesting and unique games will come out for it, mostly ones that use the
unique graphics modes. Pilotwings and F-zero are in this category.
I got the Genesis some time later because of all I had been hearing about
some of the games available for it. NHL Hockey is exceptional. Road Rash
is a riot. Sonic is amazing.
In short, the SNES has superior graphics which can be utilized in some very
interesting games. The Genesis has superior processor speed which can be used
in some very sophisticated games. TG-16 got dull very quickly.
I think for the time being Genesis and SNES will coexist on more or less
equal terms. TG-16 is betting the farm on CD. I for one am not buying.
Why put a 5 million gallon tank on a model T?
John.

671.11 | | BEING::EDP | Always mount a scratch monkey. | Thu Nov 07 1991 08:42 | 16 |
| There are a bunch of interesting games coming out for the Super
Nintendo . . . stay tuned.
I've played Super Mario World all the way through, and I have played
Sonic about half-way through. I'm using the round-select in Sonic so
that I don't have to play rounds over and over again after I have
completed them. I think Super Mario World is better -- it's got more
interesting things to do and more interesting places to find. Sonic
has really nice pictures, but it is still a standard scrolling
hit-the-monsters and climb-things game. Sometimes there is a choice of
passages to take, but they are nothing special, like finding a secret
world in Super Mario World. There are no ghost houses or fortresses in
Sonic where you have to figure out how to get a path to the exit.

671.12 | Super NES handsdown | CUJO::CRANE | The original BUDMAN | Wed Nov 20 1991 17:05 | 12 |
| My kids opinion:
I rented all three systems for my kids as we are going to sell our NES
and I wanted them to be sure which new 16 bit system they wanted. With
them the SNES won handsdown. It has good graphics, I must admit. I saw
about ten games for sale for it in the mall yesterday. We rented Pilot
Wings and it is great!

Quite right. EGM = Electronics Gaming Monthly. I nice magazine for seeing
what's coming, and how it's rated. Especially so for 16 bit games.
I'll try and watch the soup in the future,

the controllers on snes are more familiar to nes players than the
