577.0. "How do you feel about purging old notes?" by DELNI::OTA () Fri Jan 04 1991 12:15

How does everyone feel about purging some of the notes out of this
file. For example I just got SMB III and when I went to the note I
found many many notes on where can I buy it, when is it coming out etc
etc. Now that the game is out and in volume would it be ok for the
moderators to go back and purge out all those types of notes? Don't
know how much work that is for the moderators, but I think it will keep
the notes files overall size down as well as help some of us walk
    throught the notes easier.

Just a question and not meant as a definite request. For instance I
would be happy to list the notes that can be deleted from the SMB III
file because I printed up all XXXX of them and can say notes 1-X can be
deleted to save the moderators time.

    What do you think?

I agree with .0, but I think this should be more of a request
than just a question. Just my two pennies worth.

I think it's a decent idea also. But let's wait for mark's opinion.
I looked thru that note (at least the beginning) and agree that
there isn't much worthwhile there, although there is a debate about
whether games are "cartridges" or "tapes"...

I wouldn't be opposed to doing it.

577.3PURGE, PILLAGE and BURN!TROC01::WALDNERFrank Waldner DTN 637-3433Sat Jan 05 1991 21:3610
I vote 'YEAH' for purging out the old notes. Since this conference
has just moved, the backup copy of this conference can pass into the
archives and we can start out with a cleaner slate. FWIW, I think
the moderator should post a list of topics which he is thinking
of deleting, or setting a horizon date, before which all notes will
be deleted (I suggest January 1st 1990). Any strong audience opinion
on elimination of a topic would naturally be taken into consideration
    by the moderator.

But that's just my humble opinion.
577.4this conference is a great reference toolDRIVE::HANAMSun Jan 06 1991 08:525

Frank - I don't think we should delete notes or replies based on date,
since there is some really useful info in here! I think the original
note was more in line with deleting the "me too" and "where can I find
this game" replies, which can be a bother to walk thru...
577.5Europe needs the old notesANNECY::DEBACKERUse a bigger hammerMon Jan 07 1991 09:3714
I agree with -4. We in europe get the new games 6 months to one year after
the US. So we can benefit all the hints and tips posted by you US folks.

WE should keep at least games reviews and topics specific to one game
such as SM or ZELDA which are really a valuable reference.

In Europe we even cant find the hints books I have seen referenced somewhere in
this conference.

Please let us play or we'll die.

re: .0

What exactly is the problem that is trying to be solved here? Is the
conference taking up excessive disk space? If so, how much? Cannot the
'garbage' notes be skipped over with NEXT UNSEEN (assuming interactive
access, of course)? If a list of notes that are 'deleteable' is available
how many are on that list?

-Joe
577.7DRIVE::HANAMMon Jan 07 1991 11:3311

space isn't a problem, this conference hovers around 20000 blocks.

I think it's the time of NEXT REPLYing thru lots of drivel that the
original note objects to. With a slow link it can be frustrating.

As time permits, I will remove extraneous replies from whatever
the note mentioned in 577.0 was. Anything that I feel has any value,
even if not specific to that note, will remain.

If that note comes out ok, we can talk about the rest.

    re .6

What I am asking is pretty simple. Take the SMBIII note there are 203
responses. If you lock into the note for the first time you would have
to scroll through at least the first 40 notes before you get to the
actual meat of the notes which is strategies and spoilers. If you do
a next unseen it would tell the system you have read all 203 notes and
would still force you to read and the hit next through the first forty
some odd notes. These notes are like the ones in SMB IV right now.
There are 23 notes that are asking who has seen IV, whats it like,
whens it coming out. By the time SMB IV comes out I am sure we will
have at least double that many of these types of notes in front of the
real notes. I am simply saying that when I hit a note that big I
usually print it off and read it later. That takes a lot of printer
time and paper that could be eliminated if we simply purge those
prelim notes out once the games become available. It was a suggestion
that I think the moderator has agreed to do. We don't even need to do
this for all games, just the biggies like the SMB's Zelda etc.

    I hope that clarifies

577.9Up with MODERATIONTROC01::WALDNERFrank Waldner DTN 637-3433Mon Jan 07 1991 13:089
Oh...., if that was the intention of deleting replies then I agree
wholeheartedly with the idea. I had understood that there were
topics that are no longer of interest that could be deleted (apologies
to our European late-getters). Here in Canada performance of the
network is getting better, but wading through a bunch of "Me too's"
and so forth can tax one's patience on the other end of a loonggggg
    network connection.

    So here's to MODERATION!
577.10It will be alot of workCHIEFF::MACNEALPapa MacMon Jan 07 1991 16:118
If the moderator(s) is willing to do all the work required with meeting
this request, then more power to him/her. Generally speaking, replies
can only be deleted 1 at a time. Each note would have to be read and
deemed worthy to stay. I wouldn't do it, but that's just me.

Something you may want to try instead of printing out each topic would
be to do a directory of that topic and start reading from where you
find a reply heading of interest.
577.11we need more user participationMOMAX1::PILOTTEthings get a little easier, once you understandMon Jan 07 1991 16:4131

As one of the moderators for this conference. I personnaly do not have
the time to weed through all the notes and deem which ones to
keep/delete. If we could get some more volunteers perhaps it would be
easier then to get rid of the "Me too" type entries.

When I first set this conference up, it was done on the condition
that I would not have to be cleaning it up. To keep up with old
outdated entries would take a lot of time on my part. Time which I
    just don't have.

Here's one thought that the readers of this conference could help
us out on. If each person who has ever entered anyhting in this
    conference would type  DIR/ALL/AUTHOR=*::USERNAME/Output=Filename.txt
(put your name were its says username) you will get a listing of all
the entries you ever made here in Nintendo. You could then print that
text file out and you could see for yourself what entries may be old
and outdated and delete that entry yourself. I will do this today just
to get it started. Just remember that you must be on the same NODE
that you entered your reply if you want to delete it. If you can no
longer get on the same Node. Send me mail and I can delete it
    for you.

It would be nice if we could somehow start a new trend here, were
the readers of a conference all took part in maitaining a clean and
orderly Notes Conference. Then it could truly be a members orientated
    Notes file.

Sorry for being so long winded,

    	Mark,

I'm note real big in notes use but, is there a way we can time date
a reply we enter? That way a reply, say like this one will go POOF in
say 30 days. We could use this on all the "me to" and dribble notes we
enter. We each know which replies we write are worth saving at the time
    we write them.

    	Just wondering

It makes sense to have the noters delete there own notes but how about
a note similar to the For SAle/trade note. for the discusion of new
games, where they are located and are they worth to time and money.

That does not solve the problem of existing old notes but?????

I like the current practice of starting a new topic for a specific game
much better than having a New Game topic.

I agree with the size of the notefile being large and the need to
perhaps purge some of it. However as I mentioned in note 580, some of
the earlier games released by Nintendo are just taking off here in the
U.K. For instance I'm still trying to hack my way past Frankenstein and
Igor in Castlevania. (Any Spoiler would help). I do agree though that
some of the notes with a minimum of say 5 replies from 2 or three years
back could be deleted or put elsewhere. It does seem that the number of
people using the notefile has diminished over the last year or two.
What say you fellow noters.??? (Sounds like shakespeare......).

    RE:-1

Sorry.. I made the mistake of reading the topic note without any of the
replies before throwing my sixpence in. However having read some of the
replies the best idea seems to be that of deleting your own entries.
However the majority of people using this notesfile a year or two ago
when usage was high, probably no longer access it. I'm happy to go with
the moderator on this one as they are the people doing the graft, but
would suggest they delete no reply topics etc.

PS. Still can't get past frankenstein and his horrible sidekick.....

speaking as a noter and not a moderator -
I hate reading "chopped" notes. It's lousy to
have a reply referenced, try to go read it, and
    find its gone.

better to wade thru drivel than miss something interesting.

577.19Sol'n for SMB 3POLAR::COCKWELLWed Jan 16 1991 15:1711
My wife and I are just becoming Nintendo addicts, so mine has been a
read only participation so far. Having gone through the SMB 3 note for
seemingly endless notes before getting to the meat of the subject is
somewhat tiring - for those specifically interested in SMB 3 I have
already deleted the "me too" entries and arranged the remaining notes
by Worlds - the size of the whole file is down to 150 blocks. If anyone
wants a copy just send me mail and I'll be glad to share it or does it
make sense to post it in the notes file ?

I find that mcuh of the old stuff isn't a great deal of help. I'd purge
anything that hasn't had a reply in 6 months or longer. Then give
serious consideration to archiving the remaining file and restart anew.
Anyone who needs help could be pointed to the archive and it would
lessen the burden on your disk space...

the file isn't very big, 28000 blocks currently.
I personally use this conference as reference all
the time, via PAVN, and won't consider archiving it.

However, any of the mods that wish to take the time
to delete junk are welcome to.

but if the note says ANYTHING, regardless how trivial,
I think it should stay. Even a note that says only "YES"
    can be important.
