575.1 | Contending with gravity makes it different | BRAT::SMITH | Never say never, I always say. | Thu Jan 03 1991 08:05 | 37 |
| re: -.1
Pam,
I like this game. It's sort of a "planet exploration" game, in
which you travel to a dozen different planets in search of the
pieces of a special starship. The big difference between this
game and most other exploration types is that as you fly around
in the caverns of the different planets, you have to contend
with the forces of gravity, which vary from planet to planet.
If you let off your thrusters, gravity you pull you down and/or
into walls, which will cause damage to the pod you fly around in.
The caverns you fly around in aren't symmetrical, but more like
a real one might be. Fuel is a consideration for your pod, but
you can refuel at the Mother Ship that takes you from planet to
planet. You also need to find a certain amount of fuel on each
planet to take back to the Mother Ship in order to fuel it up
enough to leave for the next planet. You retrieve things by
towing them with a sort of "tractor beam". It acts more like a
rope/cable, though. An item in tow will begin to swing back and
forth if you're flying erratically, making it even more difficult
to tow. And, of course, the extra weight of it will affect the
handling characteristics of your pod. Naturally, there are as-
sorted adversaries to contend with, as well as different weapons
(which you purchase with money you earn) to use. There are also
a few pieces of hardware you can buy to enhance the performance
of your pod. I forgot to mention (or at least make it clear)
that you can rotate your pod 360 degrees, and thereby apply
thrust in any direction. The game has a password feature. One
reason I like it is because of the way you fly your pod. The
effects of the gravity make the "character control" different
than most games. With the increasing redundancy of the basic
game play in so many NES games, it was nice to see one that was
at least a little bit different.

You mentioned a password feature. Is this a password given to you to
allow you to resume the game at a later time or is it the type of
password to start at another level, get extra lives etc? Any known
passwords?

| Re .2:
The password records the player's current state in the game -- teleport
locations found, objects acquired, et cetera. I have several
passwords, but they are not marked as to their extent in the game.
Besides, you should try to play for yourself first.

575.4 | Any Hints????? | TAINO::NUNEZ | Edgar Nunez | Wed Jan 15 1992 17:03 | 3 |
| Any hints on this game, I can't get out of the second planet

575.5 | Help needed (PLEASE--I'm addicted!) | TEMPE::MERRICK | Twilight Zonie | Wed Mar 18 1992 09:39 | 10 |
| I've just started this game, I made it off the first planet and onto
the second one, but I can't get off there. I, too, could use some
hints as to how to get past this world, and also what to expect on
the other worlds. The second world is much harder to maneuver in
than the first one was. Does this get easier or harder?
My biggest problem seems to be not having enough fingers for all the
buttons I need to use...

575.6 | World Two | DEMING::CATUOGNO | | Wed Mar 18 1992 12:43 | 10 |
| If I remember correctly this world has a lot of the gravity spheres.
Try to shoot them all first, keep going back to the ship to recharge
your pod.
Some of the worlds get easier, and as you go on you will be able to buy
better weapons and equipment for your pod. I've made it to level 11,
but only have one pod and can't seem to get past it.
There are some warps, but timing and aim are critical on getting to
them.

575.7 | More questions... | TEMPE::MERRICK | Twilight Zonie | Thu Mar 19 1992 09:23 | 21 |
| I've been able to purchase some of the weapons for world 2, but I
haven't figured out how to use them. Last night as I was going to
try the A button and the select together my last man got fried by
the pink cannon thing.
Also, is there a black hole in each world? I haven't found one yet in
world 2, and it was necessary to go through that to get the ship piece.
I like the warp feature. It saves a lot of time when I lose my shuttle
and I can just warp back to the ship and start over. I also like the
"gas cans" and extra shuttles sprinkled around so I don't have to go
back to the mother ship every time.
I've only been able to get the boosters back to the ship once, and
every other time I've tried I can't budge them. I take them as far
as I can and then go back for them, only to be dragged down by the
gravity and then I can't get out. Is there any trick to make this
easier? (Does the Advantage give a bit more power in this game as
it does in SMB? And does the Game Genie work on this game?)

| I don't know if the advantage stick or game genie adds anything to this
game.
There are places, "HOLES", that you can only enter after you have
collected all the fuel, that is where the ship piece is.
When I mentioned warps, before I meant one that lets you go to a
different level. There is one on world one and you only get to see it
quickly, if you don't get to it it moves and doesn't come back. These
warps look just like the "HOLES". On World one when you exit the
mother ship head all the way to the left and you will see one of the
moving "HOLES".

575.9 | Hints on Solar Jetman (I'm addicted also)
| UNIQ::CONCORDIA | never had a dinner | Tue Jun 09 1992 17:27 | 51 |
| I have been playing alot of solar jetman the past few months...I really
have become addicted to it.
I don't know if it is conference policy to hide hints behind form feeds or
not, so I am going to throw in some <cr>'s here
As far as collecting all the "extra" parts (boosters, navigators, etc) you
really need them for later planets. The way I usually work the game is I
go around and kill all the enemies first (robot cannons, gravity planets)
which makes it easier to navigate. Some things you have to hit a few times
to kill them (super gravity planets, etc). It makes it easier than trying to
dodge stuff while carrying something with shields down.
Getting the boosters to the mother ship is a real pain in the butt, how I
usually do it is to try to start them swinging, when they swing they are
lighter and you can get them moving. Count on using 1 tank of fuel just to
get them back to the ship, but well worth it.
One thing I don't like about the game, is that it doesn't save your "special"
weapons in the passwords, and also the number of crystals you have towards
extra lives.
I have gotten to planet 8 on my own, and all the way through it using
the following trick:
When starting the game, use a password with all N's. It gives you lots of money
and a better pod. You can then buy super weapons, smart bombs, etc. and
just decimate everything that comes near you. It also starts you out with
the "super mapper" and shields, and I think 6 lives instead of 4.
Other passwords with all the same letter work also, they put you in different
planets with different amounts of credits.
