572.0. "Cosmo-Tank (Game Boy)" by LUDWIG::PHILLIPS (Music of the spheres.) Wed Jan 02 1991 07:46

    A new battle game is out - COSMO-TANK.

    I like this game a great deal - it uses a combination of overhead
    and 3-D graphics, plenty of shoot-em-up and a degree of strategy,
    a good training mode, excellent music!

    If anyone else has this game yet, I'd appreciate a few tips on getting
    past the first major hurdles, since the instructions are somewhat
    vague:

    1. How many "energy cores" are there in the first planet? Where
    can they be found? Is destroying them all a prerequisite to facing
    the boss insect?

    2. I've gotten as far as the first boss insect, but that dude seems
    nearly indestructible: I can't avoid his blasts, and he just sits
    there and takes mine in stride. Advice, please - where to aim for
    best effect, how to dodge his fire (if possible) and generally how
    to *waste* that critter!  Help!

    P.S.  I love the girl whose face appears during the training mode;
    she's straight out of the Japanese animated cartoons!

572.1Might have to put some overtime in this one...LUDWIG::PHILLIPSMusic of the spheres.Fri Jan 04 1991 09:1829
    Looks like I yelled for help too soon....

    One thing I forgot to mention: the game has a CONTINUE feature when
    you lose your last tank. You start again at the same *place*, but
    with no power-ups. Since it left me locked in mortal combat with
    the boss insect, I decided to experiment....and I found the solution!

    Spoiler follows:

    The boss insect's blasts play havoc with your shields, so don't
    let them hit! He tends to throw them slightly to the left or right,
    and is slow correcting his aim. If his shots are going to your
    left, move to the right so they fly off the screen without hitting
    you; aim for the eyes and blast away!  Watch his blasts carefully;
    if he changes to firing right, turn hard right to safely approach
    his undefended side.

    I was completely surprised when it worked, and this bad bug disappeared
    in a massive explosion. I picked up several power-ups, emerged
    from the cavern mouth to a new section of the planet, and found
    the base from which I could fly to the rest of the planets. (The
    tank "trans-forms" to a starship for the trip - and you have to
    *fight* your way to the planet.....far out!)

    It appears I'm in for a long war....!

572.2BEAT COSMO-TANKs FIRST BOSSWRKSYS::GAUBATZSat Jun 08 1991 12:2751
This note is from GAMEBOY GURU. Hold on.

The energy cores are NOT a prerequisite to the boss insect, although they
sometimes give you POWER-UPS. To beat the first boss, move so that only a
tiny part of him is on the screen and make sure that the tiny part of him is
moving towards the center of the screen. Shoot at this tiny part and as he
comes onto the screen, move away so that only a small part of him is on the
screen. If he changes direction, you might have to get on the other side of
him and repeat the process. There is one more thing you might consider doing.
If you have bombs, use them all as soon as the boss insect comes on the screen.
If you do this correctly, you will soon beat the first boss. If you have any
more questions, just send a reply.
