522.0. "Hong Kong prices ?" by SIEVAX::JAMIE (Use me, Use me... Ooops! Excuse me!) Wed Sep 26 1990 11:17

I'm going to be in Hong Kong in a week or so, and rumour has it that
electronic goods are a lot cheaper there...

So I thought I might treat myself to a Gameboy...

Does anyone have any idea what I should expect to pay in HK for one ?

Also, what accessories would you suggest I get ?

Is there a REAL "Best" game for the Gameboy that maybe I should get ?

    Cheers,

    				Jamie.

Know exactly what you need to get. Know what is normally in a package.
Some Hong Kong tourist retailers will advertise a great price and then
will $5-10 you to death on accessories which are normally included
    here in the States.

It's best to take your U.S. reference price with you and then determine
if the Hong Kong cost is that much better. Part of the calculation, of
course, is the cost of local exchange.

Unfortunately, here in the UK, the GAmeboy has only just been released
and getting hold of comprehensive retail prices of all the components
is next to impossible. I've seen prices advertised of about 90 pounds
though (about 150 dollars, I think).

From what I've seen in this conference, I should expect the basic
Gameboy (there aren't different models are there ?) + the Tetris
    cartridge. Oh, and head phones.

The only add-on I'm aware of is the carrying case which seems like a
    good idea.

Or are there more bits and pieces (I won't worry about the comms link
just yet since they're so scarce here at the moment I probably won't
find another player for a while!).

    Thanks for the tip though!

    Cheers,

522.3Yikes! That's a LOT for gameboyBCSE::WEIERPatty, DTN 381-0877Thu Sep 27 1990 11:482
Gee ... the Gameboy in the U.S. goes for about $85.00 .... maybe it'd
be cheaper to have someone here buy/send you one ??

That's almost HALF the price we pay for it here!!! Makes you wonder
who's the middle man making all the money!

Maybe if I can't get a Gameboy for less that 45 pounds (about 630 HK
dollars) then I'll arrange for a delivery from the States!!!

Cartidges here cost about 24 pounds (about $43) - I think that's more
    comparable to your prices...

    Cheers,

P.S. Anyone know anything about the Sega GAMEGEAR ?

    Jamie,

Didn't you know that it costs more to send a game from Japan to the UK
than to the U.S. .??? (-: Something's not right here. I'd bet the
cartridge prices are about the same. I'm not big on buying new ones
when there are so many used available at almost half the price, and
I've never noticed a difference between new and used. Anyway the
cartridge prices have a pretty big range, and vary depending on how
'hot' the game is .... and there's always SOMEONE here who has them on
sale for $20-$30.00. Maybe they can't get the prices here for them
like they can there (especially since it's new there!)

    GOOD LUCK!!!

522.6Check cartridge signals tooPINGS::OGRENTue Oct 02 1990 16:4317
    Jamie,

While you look for part numbers and stuff be sure to ask about
cartridge formats! While preparing to bring a Nintendo to a friend
in London I learned that the deck units and games had different
signals for different countries!! A UK game cartridge would not work
in a US deck. We thought that was really nasty.

I have heard from GIA friends that Hong Kong is *definitely* the
cheapest place to buy electronics (amongst other things). But do
be sure you know what you're buying - it'll be tough to return ;-).

Oh yeah, are you taking orders???

    Happy shopping,

    Eric
