506.0. "Help!! Broken GAMEBOY!" by HYEND::BELLEFEUILLE () Thu Aug 23 1990 14:14

    Help!!

    I recently dropped my son's GAMEBOY. (Boy am I in hot water!). The unit
    still works but the LCD has all these darl lines in it which are impos-
    sible to adjust out.

    I am willing to pay to get it fixed, but I certainly don't want repairs
    to exceed the cost of a new unit (I'm assuming that this would be an
    out of warranty and therefore out of pocket repair).

    Has anybody had a similar problem? Had it repaired? By whom? How much?

    Would much appreciate the benefit of other's experience.

    thanks,

    Rich

506.1...and 1 day it started doing this ....BCSE::WEIERPatty, DTN 381-0877Thu Aug 23 1990 16:028
    I don't have any experience with this, but I'll bet if you call
    Nintendo, they'll tell you exactly what you should do and how much it
    would cost to repair (if repairable).

    .... of course I don't think I'd tell them I dropped it.  But that's
    me! We have some lines through our games (regular NES) and we
    certainly NEVER did anything to them. It COULD have 'just happened' to
    your Gameboy.
506.2same problem hereISLNDS::STEELE_DFri Aug 24 1990 07:1311
    We have the same problem with our Gameboy.. It was lent to someone
    and returned in this condition so I am not sure what caused the
    problem. It has been dropped numerous times in the past but it
    never did any damage and now all of a sudden those lines are
    appearing. I'm wondering if this is something that comes with time.

    I would be interested in hearing if anyone else has had this problem.

    We also had this problem. If you call Nintendo, they'll give you very
    specific instructions on how to get it fixed, where to mail it, etc.
    The guy I talked to said this was a known problem with some early
    versions of Gameboy and that it is covered under warranty. I don't have
    the 800 number with me, but you can get it from the owner's manual.

We had same probrem,too.

In our case my brother's , mine , friend's Game Boy had the probrem.
(almost of all that I know!)

This trouble was coused by LCD-unit.

The clark we bought it said ,They had many troubles with this reason.

After repairing this trouble,we have any trouble with the LCD.

506.5Thanks to you all!HYEND::BELLEFEUILLETue Sep 04 1990 09:3111

    Thanks to all of you for the responses. It sounds like I have a common,
    repairable condition.

    If anyone has the '800' number for NINTENDO, I would appreciate getting
    it.

    Thanks again, I'll let you all know how I make out. (Cost, etc.)

506.6Here's my storyWIDGIT::WESTHasta la vista....baby.Thu Jul 18 1991 10:4127
  Well, I too for a while started to have vertical display lines disappear on
me.

  I called Nintendo and they directed my to my nearest Nintendo Service Center.
They also had asked for my serial number. I gave it to them. Their response
was that my unit is covered under a 'special' warranty. My unit is currently
two years old.

  Under this special warranty the LCD module (and some other components) are
swapped out for better ones...AT NO COST...that's right...IT'S FREE !!!

  Appearantly the first 2.8 million Game Boys were manufactured with what
Nintendo calls an inferior LCD subsystem. The owner of the Service Center
told me that Nintendo pays him to do this and that Nintendo is not advertising
any of this.

  If your serial number is in the range G00000000 - G02800000 then you are
a _winner_. You should go and get the warranty (or is that recall) service
done.

  The real problem is that when Nintendo sub-contracted out the LCD subsystem
this contractor did not use the highest quality parts and what happens is that
the LCD layers begin to separate (not to cool).

506.7one more BGB story....JUNCO::BOWNETue Aug 13 1991 11:3710

    	Same story on my unit. Except in my case none of the authorized
    service centers were very convenient to my area. Nintendo gave me the
    number to call Fed X, who were at my house in less than two hours, and
    I had my repaired Game Boy back (Express Mail) in less than one week.
    Not a single out-of-pocket cost, didn't even have to leave home.

    	Not bad public relations.... (they need it!)

506.8Gameboy Warranty ServiceAKOCOA::SELIGTue Jul 21 1992 17:4914
    Talk about life savers.......thanks to this note, my son's Gameboy
    (circa 1989) is being repaired with a new LCD **under warranty** for
    no charge. His GB was showing the caharacteristic vertical lines on
    either side of the screen.

    Nintendo customer service referred me to Video Service Stop in
    Framingham, MA. as a local authorized service center. They are very
    friendly there and turn around is just 3-5 days.
