492.0. "CONFLICT" by BOOKS::ANGELONE (Lean, green, and on the screen !) Fri Jul 27 1990 08:15

Well, I tried every way I know to find something in this
notes conference......... so..... I'll just ask.

Has anyone out there heard of a game called "CONFLICT" ?

Well I rented this sucker last night. I had a feeling that
it was some sort of a war simulator and I was right. You
command a set of various types of forces like different
types of tanks, infantry, planes, mobile-missles, etc....
Depending on their strength you move them some many points
on the war board and so on.

Anyone every play this game ?
Basically it is pretty neat, but the place I rented from
only had a very simple instruction set for it. The same
thing happened to me when I rented ARCHON. Both these games
are intense (in my opinion) and you really need the full
game instrustions in order to play.

Anyway, If you see it around and you are in to war games,
give it a shot. Especially, if you like fighting battles
with the odds stack heavily against you.

Should anyone want to know more or where I found this little
    beauty, send me a line.

    Luck !

I bought this game 'Conflict' a few weeks ago, and just started
getting into it ( had to finish Mario III first ).

It appears to be a pretty decent war simulation game. If you
like war games, this should be your ticket.

If you play against the machine, it does start with an unfair
advantage ( with another player, you start even ). As an example,
the game can build Mig-23's, but you can't build F-16's.

Last night I was able to finally beat the machine and win the
    first battle scenario.

Got one at Toy-r-US for $44.95.
Game is much better with instructions.
I still say it cheats, but I shall keep at it.

    Anyone got any hints ?

Do the instructions list the victory conditions for each scneario?
I know you have to get the Flag Tank, or Both Factories, but I think
you can win by getting most of the cities too.

Do the instructions say anything about the battle system? I know you
have to get the enemy sighted, so LOOK is very important, but the
Move, Hide, and Adjust don't seem to do too much. A tank seems to
sight better if it turns. And does it make a difference if you choose
DEF or RET? (I think RET means you have a better chance to evade, but
less chance to sight the enemy)

492.6CONFLICT HINTSWLDWST::SHANSENFri Aug 10 1990 00:4917
WHEN I PLAYED, I FOUND OUT THAT IF YOU MOVE YOU SEEM TO EVADE MORE, BUT
HAVE LESS COUNTER ASTTACKS. IF YOU ADJUST, YOU WILL STILL PROBABLY GET
HIT, BUT YOU ALMOST ALWAYS GET A COUNTER ATTACK. IF YOU HAVE THE
STRONGER MACHINE, YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO WIN. THE COMPUTER ALSO WORKS
IN PATERNS. TRY TO LEARN THE PATTERNS FOR EACH SCENE.
AS FOR THE CITIES AND AIRFIELDS; THEY ARE WORTH FAME POINTS. WHEN YOU
TAKE OVER ONE OF THE AREAS, IT WILL TURN FROM GREY COLOR TO BLUE. IF
THE COMPUTER TAKES ONE OVER IT WILL TURN TO RED. I THINK EACH CITY IS
    WORTH 100 FAME POINTS.
THE COMPUTER IS VERY POWERFUL, BUT IT'S ALSO VERY STUPID. I HOPE THIS
    HELPPED.

    STEPHEN

BY THE WAY, THE REASON I KNOW A LOT ABOUT IT IS BECAUSE I BECAME
ADICTED TO IT. I KEPT PLAYING TILL I HAD ALL THE BATTLES WON SO I
COULD GO ON TO THE FINAL CONFLICT. IT'S A GOOD GAME.
492.7Yep.BOOKS::ANGELONELean, green, and on the screen !Fri Aug 10 1990 09:1223
The ultimate victory, as described in the instructions, is
to beat the enemy FLAG TANK. I have wiped out all but this
and the game continues. There is also a page that describes
the 5-6 MANEUVERS such as LOOK, MOVE, etc and what the possible
outcomes are for these with respect to DEF or RET. I think that
it may also factor in the torrain that you are battling on.
There are several pages that explain the effect torrain has on
    movement, defense and offense.

DEF or RET make a difference but it is not too clear. The manual
speaks to DEF but says little about RET. Strange !

Regrading the last reply, it does work in patterns. Like most
Nintendo games, if you play a certain scenrio to death you will
win sooner or later. As far as stupid, form what I have gathered
from these board wargame wizards I know, all the computerized
game are. The better ones let you vary a number of start-up options
to help you learn and or make the game tougher.

If anyone has any specific questions on CONFLICT and its instructions,
please feel free to contact by mail. I will be happy to clarify.

I've managed to win scenario's 1-7, most of them on the first try,
and I think that the easiest way to beat the computer is to spend
your first couple of turns buying anti-air weapons. Once his air-
support and his aircraft production facility is gone (bombed), its
pretty easy to beat the ground forces, although you must protect
your production facilities from air attack or the battle can go on
    forever.

I think my longest battle was #5 (?), it took me almost 2 hrs.

I defeated the computer in all the senarios except 'Crossing the Barrier'. I
wanted to see the Final Conflict, so I went through all the letters for this
round with the letters I got from the other rounds. I did not think this 16th
round was much different from the others.

I build M48s first when ever possible then hit the Enemy 'Air' Factory. Once
the air is controlled Bombers can clean up.

I am in the Phidelphia Area and have not seen the game for sale. I could have
bought the game for the number of times I have rented it. Anyone seen it for
sale in this area.

Thanks.

Frustration level at I actually chucked the controller at the TV.
Childish I know but I was really torgued. Every battle in this

I've never played Conflict, but I understand bouncing the controllers.

My NES Advantage controller is too heavy to actually chuck at anything,
but the TV tray that it sits on it a bit bent from my slamming it down
    in frustration.

Hint: If you slam down your Advantage, and then appears to be broken,
check to make sure that one of the solder spikes on the boards hasn't
pierced any of the internal wires. You get interesting effects from
such a short circuit - but further game playing is rather hard... ;-)

492.15RE: .10 I'm also looking for Conflict..CARTUN::VALENTINEMon Oct 29 1990 12:4119
RE: .10---Did you have any luck in finding Conflict in local stores? I
live in the Maynard area and I have been looking for this game.
Toys-R-Us had it at one time, but the day I was there (2 months ago)
they were out. Now when I go there or to Child World, etc, they don't
even have an empty space for it. It's like it never existed. Any body
    out there seen it?

By the way, what I am really looking for is a game similar to a
computer game called EMPIRE where you can build various ships, armies,
fighters, etc. You then go exploring the "world" until you encounter
neutral cities, which you conquer. Each time you conquer a city you
put it to work building more fighting units. Eventually you begin to
find cities that belong to your opponent (the computer or another
player, there can be three of you), and you try to capture them, too.
You either win or lose depending on how clever you are in attacking,
what you spend time building, etc. It really is fun and CONFLICT
sounds like the closest Nintendo game to it.

    Any suggestions??

   mild Spoiler

Rick if you are on the 1st level look at the terrain, and use it wisely.

   spoiler after form feed

Attack his airpower first by watch where he move it in previous
5th scenario. The computer is Dumb and will usually make the same
moves on each turn (ie.. the first fews turns the computer always
moves the same pieces to the same locations) once you have the pattern
use the correct terrian ( ie.. flack panzers usually win over air
units if the panzers is in the trees.) to attack first. Also air
unit subtract more framing points from the computers f.p. score.

CONFLICT ON!!! Two levels down 3rd Level to GO..

Either start on another level so that you start with fame points, or
take over cities and airports. Each city and airport is worth 100
fame points and is added on to your fame points at the beginning of
your turn. Level 1 I think give you the most fame points to start out
with, but the computer also gets a lot more than on the level you're
    playing now.

    HELP!!

I have beaten the first 15 maps at Level One. I carefully wrote
down the letter at the end of each battle. But I was not careful
enough, as the game rejects my password. I called Nintendo but
they don't have the Level One password to get into the final
conflict. I don't want to have to go back and beat them all
again. Anyone have the password to go to the final conflict?

While I'm at it, some general advice:

    1. As noted in previous replies, take care to take over as many
cities and airports as you safely can. You build up fame points
(production values) that way. But once you turn a city blue,
you get credit for it even when you're not occupying it. So
it is good at the very beginning of a map to occupy some fairly
nearby cities/airports, and then retreat back to cover factories
    and commander.

    2. Don't overbuild at the beginning! I have found that much of
what you build in the beginning is useless towards the end.
What I try to do is get a couple of surface-to-air vehicles and
a decent tank. I keep one of the surface-to-air vehicles *on*
the factory as protection. And I keep a decent fighter on the
other factory for the same reason.

    3. What tends to happen is that the computer will spend the first
few turns occupying cities/airports, just like you would. Unless
you get a unit out there unprotected, it will systematically
do this until it has occupied all that it can. Use this interval
to do the same, and to move the first few surface-to-air units
off the factories and nearer your commander. Build a protective
    wall around your commander.

    4. In most scenarios, the computer will then build fighters
to send against your factories. Fighters are easily shot down
by M247's and M48's. A good tactic: put an infantry unit a
few squares away from a factory. The fighter will almost
always go after that unit. It will kill that unit, which will
only cost you 100 FP's. On your next turn, move a surface-to-air
unit out to kill the fighter. Use bait!

    5. After you kill 3 or 4 of its fighters, the computer won't
have enough FP's to build any more for awhile. It might build
air-to-surface units, which are rough on factories and tanks.
Here's where *not* overbuilding in the beginning will help you
out. Build fighters to go after his bombers. Killing them will
get his FP's down even more. By then, he will be building
    infantry and commandos.

    6. Now, use the fighters to take out his factories. You many lose
a couple, which is fine. Re-build using M1A1 tanks or air-to-surface
bombers to tank out his tanks, and his surface-to-air launchers.

    7. Then, go after his commander with the bombers.

As I say, this is general advice, but should give the new player
at least a structure to work with and modify.

    Password anyone?

    Joel
