424.0. "Top Gun "2nd mission"" by AIRPRT::AZORIAN () Tue Feb 27 1990 13:22

Has anyone played the (I guess) new Top Gun "the second mission".
I bought this game last night. It seems pretty hard to get past stang
1. Plus the instruction book tell you one thing but when you go to
do it, it does'nt work..

Any info on this game, (how to win) would be great..

From the TV ad now, not personal experience.........

2-player or against the computer play.
You can do 'rolls' (ala AFTERBURNER).
In fact, it is alot like AFTERBURNER !

The ulimate challenge is a big Russian chopper (I think).

424.3Here is what I know.TLE::FUELLEMANNSoftware engineers put the 'soft' in software.Wed Feb 28 1990 08:5819

I have been playing the game for about two days now.
It is VERY fast. . . .

The graphics are OK, it would be better if Nintendo was
16-bit, but that is another issue. ;-)

You have three scenarios. The first one you have to destroy
a Soviet Backfire bomber. The second you have to destroy a
new Soviet helicopter. The final scenario you have to destroy
the Soviet "Star Wars" Space Shuttle. There is only one
problem with the last scenario, Soviet satellites take pot
shots at you with their lasers while you are trying to get
to the Space Shuttle.

You can also duel someone else or the computer.

424.4Any Successful Strategies?EXIT26::SAARINENThu Mar 01 1990 09:0715
I also got Top Gun II over the weekend. The farthest I got so far
is just almost, I guess through stage 1. I blast my way to the
first contact with the subs and take out 2-3 of them. Then the
screen turns to attacking the bomber at 12 oclock. I have splashed the
bomber once, and when the screen returns to the original ocean graphic,
you get chased by some fighters from behind. That's when I usually
buy the farm before I can blow up anymore subs.

Am I close to getting through stage 1?

Any good strategies to getting through the intial stage?

Have FUN!
-Arthur

424.5You are done when you land.TLE::FUELLEMANNSoftware engineers put the 'soft' in software.Thu Mar 01 1990 11:215

I have not figured out any strategies yet. To finish a
stage, you have to sucessfully land your plane on the carrier.

424.6...."Roger, scramble one...."LUDWIG::PHILLIPSMusic of the spheres.Wed Mar 28 1990 09:5727
I just bought Top Gun II last night. I like it!!! I LIKE IT!!!

The first thing that strikes you is the vastly improved agility
of your Tomcat. You can pull some real fast turns to sight on a
target; or some moderately fast barrel rolls; or even (my favorite)
a gut-wrenching loop. Your flying here makes the original Top Gun
feel like you're driving a truck....

The next thing you notice is the choice of scenarios to fly. The
first scenario (1-v-everyone) is most like the original, but I haven't
taken time to discern any pattern to the attackers, since there's
a LOT of them.....a real "furball", as pilots call it....!

The second scenario is a bit simpler: just you against a single
Soviet ace. Maneuver like mad, don't let him get at your six (behind
you) and waste him with a solid missile shot. Swell....now all
you have to do is land on the carrier (this seems a bit easier than
in the first Top Gun.)

The third scenario is a lot of fun: you and a human opponent can
go head-to-head. The screen is split to accomodate both pilots-eye
views. (My wife enjoys this scenario, and has even hosed me a few
times....what a blow to the ego!)

Konami has done it again!

424.7Hooks to select missionHPSCAD::DUSEKFri Mar 30 1990 23:035
I was wondering if anyone has discovered any hooks in the game to allow
you to skip the first mission and select any one of the missions you
like?

424.8Get yerself another F-14!LUDWIG::PHILLIPSMusic of the spheres.Wed Apr 11 1990 10:2610
First thing I've found that's not in the instruction book: you are
awarded a bonus jet at 20,000 points (a tone sounds briefly to let
you know)

I haven't seriously looked for hooks yet - I'm having too much fun
just flying the Tomcat! :-) (However, I have defeated all the Soviet
aces in the 1-v-1 combat and was rewarded by a rather impressive
Top Gun trophy screen).

re. .4

Have you gotten past splashing the bomber (fighter?) yet?

When you do, and the screen returns to regular combat..(minor spoiler)

.....watch your radar screen carefully! When those two dudes come
at you from behind, you have to evade the moment they appear. At
the same time, there is a sub in the water below, so your only recourse
is a tight turn or possibly a loop. I found that the high-G turn
usually foxes the bandits every time. If it doesn't, and you get
hosed.......(yet another minor spoiler)

.....when things start up again, the first bandits coming at you
will be the two fast dudes coming from behind. Try the high-G turn
the instant they appear!

Now....if you last much beyond that, tell ME what happens - I get
mixed in some pretty hairy knife-fights after that, and some *&$!*
MiG sneaks in and picks me off!

424.10Not much farther than UEXIT26::SAARINENFri Apr 27 1990 17:2315
Hi there...

I have gotten to where I have knocked off a few subs, than I am
in the air to air combat with the Mig. I have killed the Mig
off and than the game returns to the ocean view. I have avoided
and splashed the Migs from behind and successfully knocked out
at least 4 more subs, and than *B*L*A*M* the missle from the
sub gets me all the time.

I've killed 2 of the Russian Aces.

I haven't gotten any farther than that.

Re. -1

I decided to retry the "1-v-aces" mode again last night, and made
it to the next-to-last rank (Captain) before I was shot down by
the final pilot. The first six pilots were almost too easy to knock
down <minor tactical spoiler>.....

.....to maximize my chances of getting him in the first shot, I
select the Phoenix missile - it has the widest "lock-on" field.
After you are launched from the carrier, your Tomcat will climb
to combat altitude. The INSTANT you level off, let loose a missile
and throw your fighter into a roll to evade the oncoming missile.
Nine times out of ten, you'll waste him - often so fast you'll be
saying "Did I get him? Did I get him?" (I understand that this is
much like the way REAL air combat is....wow!) If your Phoenix fails
to hit him, the roll will buy you the seconds needed to maneuver
to a good firing position.

When I tried it last night, I clobbered Soviet aces 1,2 and 4,5,6
with my first missile shot. Ace #3 evaded, but I got him after
some vicious maneuvering. Ace #7, on the other hand, evaded all
five of my Phoenix missiles, and wouldn't sit still long enough
for me to get a gun kill! (Maybe next time, I'll try Sparrow missiles
for ace #7.......:^)

Try that tactic out, and good luck, aviator!

424.12First Mission Completed Sir!EXIT26::SAARINENWed May 02 1990 17:3728

Re. -1

This makes me happy...I got through the first mission!
And landed!

<spoiler>

For the first mission, I found that you can destroy incomming
missles with cannon fire, which helps alot when you have two
subs and planes on the screen. By selectively taking out the
incomming missles you can go back to the subs and destroy
them. Also try just using cannon fire to take out the planes
and the first few of the subs, then when the action gets more
intense you can use your missles as well, it saves them when
you need them later on for downing the bomber.

When I got to the part on the First Mission, where you come up
to the Backfire? bomber, blast away at the jet engines from
right to left, but don't stay in one place too long or those
black missles that come from under the bomber will send you
into terminal freefall. Just keep blasting and don't stop,
once all the engines turn black, than the plane burst into
flames and you have successfully completed the first mission
once you landed. It gets pretty intense.

Pretty good flying splashing those Russian aces...
424.13Just got it - LOVE IT - but...MISFIT::GEMMELand now here's Mac and Tosh...Tue Jul 17 1990 10:5528
Maybe I got a defective copy, but -

In the mano-o-mano mode, the flight characteristics are really very
sluggish and the "LIFE" bar has no decernable pattern of operation.
The instructions (for what thy're worth) indicate you cannot roll with
a fulle "LIFE" yet rolling is fine, you cannot loop. The "LIFE" bar
will drop to zero with no consistent pattern and you get to pull a
loop. The interesting aspect of this is that you can loop and come back
right in front of you opponent. The scene - my advisary is in front of
me in my sights and pulls a loop. If I stay flat an level, viola, at
the end of the roll, there is my target, right back where it started.
My wife and I experimented quite a bit last night and found that we
could fly head to head (in each others gun sights) at 764mph and stay
there indefinatly. I found I could also screw up the radar screen so
that one screen had the "enemy" in BACK when both planes were head on
in FRONT (in the sights even).

As for the regular game, my biggest complaint is the lack of altitude
aspects. The loop (again) seems to keep you oriented to the same enemy
positions like in the one-on-one versions.

Despite these complaints, this game will be my first choice for a while
(at least a week ;^). I splashed the "ace" in the first stage and then
got blasted from "nowhere" in the next sage of Level 1. My son is
getting pretty good with the Advantage (my choice for most action
games) and can make it to Captain in the "1 vs game" sequence.

I have borrowed this game from my brother but it lacks instructions.
I can't seem to make the sidewinder fire and without the directions
I don't know if I'm using the right button or not. So the question
