| Yes, it's like Faxanadu - starts you back at the last "healing place"
that you've visited with all the items that you've found thus far.
However, if you die inside a cave or a castle, any item found in that
cave on that trip goes back to its original place - you have to go and
get it again.

| This game is great. You have a huge variety of swords, shields, items
and magic. The graphics are tremendous. You have spells that can send
lighting through the sky or turn yourself into a monster. There are so
many things to explore. I have nine swords 10 shields and you have to
find which one works best against the monsters. I have almost solved
it. I already killed kiel (sp) and tried to fight Bavorada (sp) but she
is difficult.

3) How do you kill General Kiel ?
Thanks in advance ...

| re: .4
Huts that have no path access are not used (just visual).
re: .5
1) Losing the CREST must mean that Willow is dead. CONTINUE (or the
password you receive) should put you outside Bavmorda's castle with the
crest back in your possession. You have to defeat Kiel to get to
Bavmorda.
2) I thought you just met Kiel? The location of any keys (and most
anything else) required in this game can be discovered by talking with
the characters that you meet.
3) Practice and Persistence.

| I'm surprised there's been so little activity in this note!
I think this is a fantastic game! Very similar to Zelda but
not as difficult (which I appreciate).
If there's anyone out there that's finished this game, I could
use some general tips. I've reached the cursed bridge before
the evil queen's castle and can't cross it. Obviously I don't
have the item I need. What I'd like to know is if anyone has a
list of the shields, swords, items and magic that one should have
upon reaching this point. Also, any ideas of how many things I
should be looking for in the mountains in this area would be
appreciated. I've found about 3 so far (I believe). Is it
necessary to have all the "slots" full for each (magic, items etc.)?
Any information would be appreciated.
Thx

I have the Fire Majic the Majical Stick an the Healing Mace.
And i have various items.
These are my Questions.
Where do the Brownies go after you get the Bracelet?
Wher does madmartigan go when you free him.
And what do you do at lake Cheef. I search through the crossroads at
seem to go in circles. I get to a place where you go under water but
the first 10 steps and I die. Do you need an item to pass this. I have
180 hit points and 160 magic.

In answer to some of your questions:
I haven't seen the brownies again. I believe they were there as a
sort of trick...to make you think you needed the sphere, which the
dragon won't give you.
Madgarten (or whatever) gives you some important information once you
free him and run into him again at the tavern. He'll answer your
question about getting thru the water.

408.11 | finishing willow | DUGGAN::WILLINGER | | Wed Feb 21 1990 18:39 | 24 |
| How long it takes to finish depends alot on your style of play,
but we finished it by playing "family style" (everybody pitching in)
over a week or two. You can finish faster if you're adept at mapping -
that way you don't waste alot of time going back over the same places,
or missing a corridor that contains something you need later on. Just
explore every room, cave, corridor, house, etc. and you'll finish it.
It's a good idea to periodically stop and pick up a new password so
that you can easily return to a point in the game where you may have
missed something.
In general, the characters you meet have some value - either an item or
a clue or magic. Once past them, a few show up later, but many don't.
I found that to be part of the game's charm - you never know who you're
going to run into again. Each and every item seems to be necessary to get
past at least one obstacle, but you can skip a sword, shield or magic
spell and still finish the game. If you reach an impasse, you probably
need to go back and find a clue or an object that will help you.
(surviving the lake crossing, or crossing the bridge are good examples)
By the way, the ending is one of the best I've seen. It's done like
movie credits, where all the previous scenes from the game are recapped
behind the credits which flash in front. Some of the names they use
are hilarious. We keep going back to defeat Bavmorda just so we can
watch the ending again.

| I am stuck in trying to defeat a 'boss' - it is in the cave system
after fin raziel, and looks like a pig with spines. I am currently at
level 14, and can damage him about 75% with the battle sword (the more
powerful swords I have don't seem to do as well). For those of you who
have beaten this guy, what level were you - I don't relish building up
23000+ points to get to level 15, unless it's really necessary. On the
other hand, I'm going noplace this way and my frustration is rising

| Rich....
I'm currently at level 13 (I think, around 39K) and I believe I
have already taken care of the "boss" you're talking about. I'm
in the evil castle with one obstacle before I take out the queen!!
Anyway......
I don't exactly recall the "pig with spines", but does it shoot
things at you? What I found on thoses "bosses" that shoot is
that you hold your attack while they shoot, letting your shield
deflect the "bullets". Then you have to hit 'em between shots.
Also, do you have the regular controllers or something like the
Advantage? It will take quite a bit longer with the regular
controller....I have the advantage and use "auto" for my sword
which is a LOT easier.
If you're looking for more info send mail.

| Thanks for the quick reply - I tried it last nite and it worked! I
think that one was not as tough as I made it on myself. Also I noticed
that by playing with the turbo rate on my advantage, I was able to get
a faster 'fire rate' than I had been getting - I always just cranked it
to full on, but there is a point (on mine) at just below .5 actually
gives you a faster action - I suppose that the higher rate generates
too much interrupt service, and slows the game down.) Now if I could
just get through that next maze ..........

I have found my way to a long bridge which I can't get on. First
question is a bit before this. There is a place by a stream where there
are lots of little 'man hole covers'. Whenever I cross them, they start
to vibrate and just beat the H*LL out of me. I perservered, and got
across, but it cost a lot of magic points to renew my life. Is there a
magic item that (I am missing) would help here? Secondly, just before
the bridge in question is a cave. A man in the casve says that the
bridge is cursed and no one can get to ____ ____ (forget the name of
the kingdom - two short words). He is right, as far as I can see - I
can't get on the bridge. If I take the parellel path which runs just
south of it, I get to a dead end with another cave that just seems to
take me back where I was. I must need some magic or item that I don't
have - or a fresh idea - any help in sight would be appreciated!!

I have a question about the rocky maze NW of the cursed bridge. The
question follows the form-feed.
There is a cottage that is a healing place in this area. Just north of
the cottage there is a treasure chest blocking access to a cave. There
is also a staircase just to the right of the cave entrance. I have
searched and mapped all of this area and cannot find a way to get to
the cave. Any clues?? Should I use magic? If so, just say that and
I'll try to figure out which to use. I have a feeling there is
something important either in that cave or in the area accessible by
the staircase.
Appreciate any hints.

Remember the sword fights in all those great old movies with Fairbanks

and retreat. If that doesn't help...
Take him on head on. March straight up the screen and attack once.
Retreat(don't go to either side, go back straight), wait and dodge his
attack and wait for him to tire. Repeat this until he succumbs. I don't
think it matters what kind of sword you use, just as long it one of the
more powerful ones, you picked up late in the game.

408.57 | What's the secret of killing Bavmorda? | DELREY::UCCI_SA | | Fri Jun 22 1990 11:51 | 9 |
| How did you defeat Bavmorda!! I've gotten there 3 times and used
the cane. I can pin her in a corner and hit her with every shot,
not missing one. But I run out of magic JUST before her life level
runs out. Then she kills me! Am I supposed to use a sword also?
I'm the highest level I can be, so I can increase my magic. I'm
stumped!

I believe you have JUST enough magic do in Bavmorda when you are at the

It's tough. Took me a *lot* longer than 3 tries to do! Good luck!

Hi!
I made it to the first castle ( Tir Asleen) and beat the boss after
the second time going in.... After beating him I went through the door
to the rear and dropped into the dungeon, Where I met Gen Kiel.....I
was later freed by the brownies. I lost the crest and am kind of stuck.
I've made my way to Nockmaar, and can't get in!!! I went to the hut to
the left of tir asleen and the door won't open up..... I, backtracked
almost every and can't locate anything that I may have missed.....
I've only battles two major bosses so far one in the tunnel system and
the other in tir asleen..... A major spoiler is needed, or even a
little one will do......

What to do next:
I *think* the brownies are waiting for you at the entrance to the
cave south and to the right a little. It's been a long time, but now
that you've been freed, I think you can now enter this cave and come
out the other end, where (another spoiler follows)...
the old man's hut is (just above it), but you couldn't get there
before because it was blocked.

408.61 | Nockmaar - help!!! | GNPIKE::NICOLAZZO | | Mon Oct 15 1990 08:17 | 15 |
| Possible spoilers:
I've been through the castle at Tir Asleen - there are only 2
floors + basement , right? Gone through the cave system to Nockmaar,
and I cannot get into the castle! There is a guard who says something like :
'this is no place for the likes of you.'
Is there a way to go around the guard, or have I missed something?
I had a similar problem getting the witches boots from the old man -
I talked to him about 15 times before he finally gave me the boots,
I still don't know why he suddenly decided I was worthy!
Any help?

408.62 | Harder than crossing the George Washington BR | CSS::JAFFE | | Thu Oct 25 1990 11:43 | 10 |
| Scouring this note file, I finally found a hint that I am not crazy. I
have spent hours looking for the "boots" to cross the cursed bridge. I
have talked to the cave dweller who tells me that there is no way to
cross the cursed bridge and get to Tir Asleen. I imagine that this is
the one that somehow sometime gives me the boots. Is this essentially
correct? Has anyone figured out what the trigger is to make him give me
the boots?
I am despirate and need an answer. Please phone, mail or reply.

408.63 | Some additional winning hints | CSS::JAFFE | | Mon Oct 29 1990 13:35 | 39 |
| Just to make it official that my family and I smashed Bavmorda and with
lots of pride watched the final scenes. We felt good that despite our
cry for help (which nobody responded to) we did it ourselves. I have
put behind a form feed, several hints that might be useful to those
that follow that were not located elsewhere in this topic.
- the spiney creature in the back of the cave just past the first river
and Fin Razel can be had by standing perfectly still and stiking as the
creature comes to yuo. Your shield will do the blocking work for you if
you don't move.
- The witches boots can be had from the cave dweller as mentioned in
this topic previously. What it didn't tell you was that you had to
bother this person by gointg in there repeatedly before you got the
boots.
- A similar thing happened with the key to Nockmoor. After getting the
instructions, I visited the old lady's house and the door would not
open. I went back to Nockmoor and tried it again and it worked. Why?? I
don't know.
- Gneral Keil is a real tough one to beat. It took me about 20 tries to
kill him off. YOU MUST EXIT (OR USE FLEET) AFTER KILLING HIM AND BEFORE
GOING ON TO FIND BAVMORDA, AND VISIT A HEALING STATION. THIS WILL LOCK
IN YOUR KILL. Otherwise, you might have to kill him again.
- Bavmorda is easier by comparision. You must not use up ANY MAGIC ON
THE WAY UP TO HER!!! YOU WILL NEED IT ALL. Once inside her place,
position yourself in the top right corner and face down. When she
starts up your way, slowly loose a shot from the magic cane at her. Do
not fire too quickly. By doing it slowly, she will stay in her place
and just kick back a little after each hit. You must score a hit wit
every shot until your entire magic is gone. The second phase with the
sword is VERY easy and she will die just like the dragons you have had
to kill on your way around.
Good Luck

spoiler after form feed
Robert
go back and visit Nockmar again and talk to the people there. After
that revisit, go to Tir Asleen, and "knock" on the house door that is
just below and to the left of the castle. The door should open for you
this time and the old woman should give you the key.
I also had to do this more than once to get the door to open. If it
still fails to open try it again. The one to visit in Nockmoor is the
person that tells you about the key. What I did was as soon as I got
that message, I fleeted out of the building, and called Po to carry me
to Tir Asleen. I went right up to the house and the door opened for me.
Good Luck,

Thanks again for the help! Finished the game last night.
spoilers :
The thing that was getting me was getting past the guard at the

I had to change myself into a monster to scare the guard away.

When you die, get the password. Write it down exactly as you see
it (using mixed case). Then shut the machine off (or continue if
you wish).
The next time you start it up, enter the pasword you got (using
mixed case) and then hit start, you should then enter the game.

Fay,
I'm not sure what you mean by "does the password change with
each game". I know that the passwords are determined (i.e.
calculated/encoded) by:
1) your posessions at last rest point
2) your level (not exp though) at last rest
3) place of last rest
So, if you get a password, it will return you to the same
place/level every time you use it.

You have to complete the quest in the cave north of Dew. That
requires that you get past the guard.
More spoiler:
To get past the guard, you need an Item. You have to get past both
'green cobras' to get the item.

Just got a NES fror Xmas. This game was given to my 10 year old
daughter. So far, I'm ahead of her. Too bad I can't keep up with her on
Mario Brothers. Anyway, I have a couple of questions. Can the trees in
Death Forest be killed? I've been avoiding them but would love to kill
one.
Is there a way to quit the game? I couldn't find anything in the
instruction booklet. I can die and get the password but would rather
just leave and come back later.

408.79 | Can't kill trees - at least I couldn't! | FSTTOO::HEMOND | THE AMERICAN HARP | Thu Dec 27 1990 16:01 | 12 |
| Tom,
I finished the game quite a while ago and will try to remember,
I couldn't find anyway to kill the trees, just timed it to get
through without getting smashed by the fireballs.
I don't know the answer to your second question, as I only play with
the NINTENDO for a set period of time (depends on the game). For
Willow the time factor was an hour each night (my son and I played
this one as a team and that's all he's allowed per day with it).
Hope this helps.

Anyway. while I'm here, is there a way to see samething that was told
to you previously? The old lady in Death Forest told me she lost Po. I
believe she said he was in Death Forest. I assume this is the area from
the bridge to the cave of the Dragon with the fireballing trees. I
can't find Po!!!!! I have even crossed the lake. (Fin Raziel is now a
bird) I think I've been everywhere in the Death Forest. Can I get her
to say it again or does someone have it written down? Am I correct in
my thinking of where Po should be?

| Re .78 B:
The only way I know of to get a password is to get killed. If
ANYONE finds another way, PLEASE post it here!
Spoilers
Re .78 A:
With the equipment you normally have at that stage, no. I have NOT
tried with some of more powerful swords from the end of the game. There
is a definite leason here - don't try to fight everything you see. It
makes more sense to go around the big mountain rather than directly over
the peak, unless you are trying to get to the peak.
Re .80:
Po is not IN Death Forest, but you knew that. It is near by however
and you have definitely passed the place where it is found. A little
indirect reasoning will tell you that it is not likely to be hidden in the
sections before the forest, so put some effort into the sections immediatly
after the forest.

thanks but I had already went back and found Po. I should have
mentioned that. I even went back to Nelwyn and all the way back to see
if I had missed anything to that point.
I made it to the red towers but I don't have the red crystal. I am
wondering if I need to get the crystal from the dragon. He gave me a
bracelet but I haven't got a crystal from him. Maybe the brownies lied
to me. Wandered back and found I still can't get by Sorsha either. I
like the effects of going up the east tower. The torches lighting and
being able to see the steps below.
